I would have loved the year 1989 as well had i not been a wee baby.

As i have stated before on the Batman (1989) board i am truely proud and glad to have been born in 1989.

From The Joker.

I was born in 1986, and am acutely aware that I just missed out on the most recent golden age of film-making. Whoa to have been born just a few years earlier. I would've killed to have been old enough to have seen Aliens, Die Hard, Shawshank Redemption, Terminator 2, and yes, Lethal Weapon 2 in the theaters. Hell I got a list of like 30 movies I would've liked to see on the big screen.

We can only hope that good days for film will come again. Right now we're going through something of a rough patch.

1989 also saw the release of Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier (not as bad as everyone says, though, mind you).

WOW, that does sound like one hell of a summer.....too bad I was a newborn, LOL!

1989 was the second summer of love in the UK. All the cool kids were in fields and warehouses partying, not sitting in a theatre watching batman!

reply

I agree, it was an amazing summer! I remember seeing both LW2 AND License to Kill back to back :-)

I was 14 then, so I have fairly fresh memories of it all. I remember standing in a LOOOOOOOOONG line to see Batman. I also remember lesser films like UHF and Fletch Lives. And who else could forget TANGO AND CASH??? Some of the best one liners shot off at machine-gun efficiency.

On a sad note: Many of the theatres showing these movies are now gone, replaced by a 24 Hour Fitness gym and a DSW warehouse. Despite how things change, I will always keep the memories of '89 and the rest of my childhood deep in my heart.

reply

Yeah, I remember the times we went to the theater to watch these. How I miss the 80s.

reply

Ghostbusters 2 doesn't suck, underwhelming yes...but not terrible! It's darker than the first movie despite the abundance of slapstick.

reply

Also KICKBOXER!

Van Damme was HUGE back then, as were martial arts films in the 80s. I'll just admit that I idolized the guy, even taking karate classes to become a badass like him (I failed, lol). Martial arts weren't only intheaters, but basic cable played the HELL out of 70s dubbed martial arts films (Samurai Sunday!).

Long live 80s martial arts films!

I remember going to one of the biggest theaters in my area in STL to see Batman that summer. I believe that was the first packed-house sold out show I had ever seen and I loved it!

Other than that, I saw Ghostbusters II with my brothers and Peter Pan with my mom. How I wish I could have seen the others, Fletch Lives, etc at the movies that year!

I was roughly 15..and remember being in the movies EVERY weekend that summer..seriously!

Around my way, the most anticipated was Batman...merchandise was EVERYWHERE and everyone I knew was sporting a Batman T-shirt! Bought 2 or 3 myself.

And every single movie listed by the OP I saw in theaters! My fav of the bunch would've had to have been Last Crusade! But remember being excited for ALL of them...Licence to Kill was vastly underrated and got lost in the sea of Blockbusters that summer and underperformed at the box office (probably getting Dalton fired in the process...though no one behind Bond will admit that)...still one of my favorite Bonds EVER along with Skyfall.

I think a lot of people forget how popular VHS was, so not only people going to the movies everyone listed in theaters, but people were still watching tapes of Gremlins, Rocky, Rambo, Terminator, Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, etc etc

the whole decade was amazing.. the music & tv shows might be outdated, but the movies are still golden

I was 9 in the summer of '89, and while I remember all of these movies (plus Honey I Shrunk the Kids and Do The Right Thing), the only time I actually saw in theaters were Batman and Ghostbusters II. The others I eventually saw after they were put on video.

That being said, yeah...1989 was a terrific year for entertainment in general. Movies, music, TV and even sports were all excellent that year. 1989 had a certain energy and 'color' that hasn't been seen since.
