To say the least! And she's supposed to be 16? What upper-middle class child gets engaged at 16 and announces it to her family? At 16, you pretty much do what your parents tell you to... fine, you're engaged... now get your ass on the boat, we're leaving for two years (the OP seems to have the point of view that someone not old enough to have a drivers' license, vote, smoke or drink is considered a free-willed adult, able to do whatever they want. Quite a reach (but it IS just a movie...), but probably not any more than most "teen" movies, where everyone is almost 30, but still in high school.
As far as finances go... why sell the house? For all we know, they have a million bucks in their checking account.
