TL;DW It sucked. :)

Edited to add; The lawyers liked it even though it had flaws.

As often is the case, the more intimately you know the subject matter, the worse a fictional work that is dramatized for entertainment becomes.

That being said, he gave it an A Minus. "it's not perfect, but it's pretty dang close. And they get a lot of little details right."

The other guy agreed. I guess an A- with a lot of little details right equates to "it sucked" now?

reply

Hyperbole. :) They had lots of comments about how this or that does not happen in court. They were very entertained by the film so it got an -A. It's been months since I watched this clip; I should have reviewed it again before posting.

I enjoyed Top gun until my brother who is in the Air Force had certain things to say about it. He is much more familiar with the operation of military aircraft than I am. then I enjoyed it a bit less.

I was a submariner in the USN; so I think Crimson Tide sucked, really bad. As in the 2nd worst submarine film made. When I tell people that Kelsey Grammer's film, Down Periscope, was less unrealistic than Crimson Tide, civilians tell me 'no way". Submariners just smile or agree.

It's a common thing seen across multiple professions.

Law Enforcement hate most police dramas, but love Reno 911 and Supertroopers.

Nurses and Doctors hate most Hospital dramas, but loved Scrubs.

Navy hates The Last Ship and Last Resort, but love Down Periscope.

A Drama takes itself seriously, so when they get things wrong, especially when they get things blatantly wrong... It stands out as bad to those in the profession.

A Comedy doesn't take itself seriously and isn't expected to be realistic in every respect, the humor then often accentuates (in an overblown caricature of reality) the truth of things that are known to those who've lived the life.

I can totally see the Crimson Tide thing. In order to ratchet up the drama, I'd guess they really have to stretch some things and outright make others up. Normal every day reality just isn't that dramatic or interesting. LOL

Submarine life was boring AF, unless we were doing something other than listening for a contact.

But the reason Crimson Tide sucks is that it needlessly dramatized things. I have a list somewhere on the Crimson Tide page.

I would say that just about every profession portrayed in films could be picked apart by real-life professionals. Lawyers in movies, doctors in movies, Police, etc.

I worked a while in TV and always found it amusing how it was portrayed on shows like "Sports Night" or "The News Room."

We all know our professions are going to be hollywood-ized for the mass audiences....

"artistic licence "

I dont want to watch a film that is 100% realistic - it'd probably be boring AF!

I've seen his videos. I'd like to see him analize the court room scenes in Rules of Engagement. There's a particular scene in it I'd like to see him analize.
