She Chose The Wrong Partner!

the Ethan Hawke character was an abusive, self-destructive, substance-addicted, neurotic, selfish loser, and a jerk to everyone around him. Ben Stiller's character was a normal, functioning human adult: morally compromised and corrupt--that is to say, alive. To step into the circle of life is to choose not to be pure, whether you are Gandhi or Donald Trump. I tried to tell this to some younger people that I saw the film with and needless to say, I got from the MTV generation nothing but hostile stares. What can you expect from a group whose aim is to revive the worst music and fashions of this century?

I can't believe people actually think Michael was the better option for Lelaina. He's a nice guy and I'm sure many women would love to date him. But Lelaina? Really?

They had no spark, nothing in common, completely different outlooks on life, they didn't even understand each others jokes. They just didn't fit.

Troy was a jerk at times, but it was clear from the very beginning that there was something there between him and Lelaina. Sure, he's a bit of a bum, but he's intelligent, young and far from a hopeless case. But more importantly, he was right for Lelaina.

Safe and comfortable may be right for some people but it really wasn't right for Lelaina.

I agree. Troy had a very low E.Q. He was abusive and emotionally damaged and kind of a snob ~ a very poor choice as a life partner.

I loved the scene where Ben Stiller's character talked about, "The guy with the skull of the court jester who just says, 'Oh, I knew him!'" Even though he wasn't as good with words, he was smart enough to have Troy's number.

This movie gives the slacker underachieving realist intellectual anti-hero a hero. That's why Troy gets the girl in the end.

Both have their limitations. That's one reason reality bites.
