Worst picture to have ever won the best picture oscar

Harvey Weinstein must have slipped some serious wads of cash to win over Saving Private Ryan

It is a decent film, fun to watch, nothing special. I could not say if it is the worst "best picture", I have not seen them all, but for me it is the least good out of the five nominated films that year.

I'd say it's the funniest film I've seen in years, but perhaps you have to have a background in live theatre or Shakespearean lit. crit. to get the best out of it.

Perhaps that helps, but not always.

I watched the film with my girlfriend, who recently graduated from a theatre academy and has experience as a stage director. I myself am only a casual theatregoer, but I am a philologist, and even though I haven't studied Shakespeare in particular, I'd say I am sufficiently versed to be able to enjoy "Shakespeare in Love".

Neither of us, however, thought the film was anything special, and other than several laughs and the performances of Judi Dench and Tom Wilkinson, we did not particularly enjoy it.

Usually we like theatre comedies, we recently watched and enjoyed "Birdman", for example, but "Shakespeare in Love" did not work for us. Perhaps part of the problem was the fact that it was so praised, which raised our expectations too much.

Either way, I think it falls short of films like "Life is Beautiful" or "Saving Private Ryan", which were also nominated for best picture that year.
