Best Portrayal of Satan in a film

Real quick though- Not in a leading role. So, Al Pacino doesn't count. I mean the ones similar to Gabriel Byrne... although he is not my pick. MY pick is Viggo Mortenson in The Prophecy, he was too good for that part. Whilst I did enjoy some aspects of Gabe's performance, escpecially the look on his face when blew up Kevin Pollack the first time (BOOM!) Viggo was just that much better.
Jack Nicholson in The Witches of Eastwick comes into play, too. But he was too... I dunno, sleazy is a good word. There are many aspects of Satan in film yet to be explored, I always thought that Robert Redford would've been great as Satan, even if he was the Angel of Death in that one episode of the Twilight Zone. Anyway, let me know your favorites.

I haven't seen Viggo Mortonsens portrayal but I can imagine that he's good.
But my money goes to Peter Stormare in Constantine, he does an awesome Devil.

My pics would be:
Rosalinda Celentano-Passion of the Christ (gives me chills)
Al Pacino- The Devil's Advocate (he was just way too cool)
Gabriel Byrne-End of Days (Suave and deadly)
Robert Deniro-Angel Heart (hands down awesome performance, I really dig his Louis Cypher alias)

my vote goes to Peter Stormare in Constantine

I think it should go to Pacino in The Devil's Advocate... I'm surprised it's not been mentioned. Byrne is on a similar ground here, but Pacino is the man!!

Sorry I did not convey that in the thread's title. But I think that Al Pacino was fantastic as Satan, but you can do so much with any part when it's in the lead. It's hard to make a supporting part as good with so little time. Al was good, but he doesn't count on this thread.

then this will probably fall into the Non applicable category as well, but i just wanted to point out how brilliant a job Jeff Goldblum did in Mister Frost.

I was blown away by just the sheer amount of thought that went into his character's intent/contentions as opposed to the usual special effects or Biblical references.

and it's really funny to me that i stumbled onto this discussion because i've been following Gabriel's show In Treatment. The struggle in Mister Frost is between he and a Psychologist. It is quite the spin for a takeoff premise for a movie.

OP said Pacino doesn't count.

Stormare.

Another vote for Stormare. I liked the fact that he wore a white suit. It was delightfully out of character.
