Best Portrayal of Satan in a film

Real quick though- Not in a leading role. So, Al Pacino doesn't count. I mean the ones similar to Gabriel Byrne... although he is not my pick. MY pick is Viggo Mortenson in The Prophecy, he was too good for that part. Whilst I did enjoy some aspects of Gabe's performance, escpecially the look on his face when blew up Kevin Pollack the first time (BOOM!) Viggo was just that much better.
Jack Nicholson in The Witches of Eastwick comes into play, too. But he was too... I dunno, sleazy is a good word. There are many aspects of Satan in film yet to be explored, I always thought that Robert Redford would've been great as Satan, even if he was the Angel of Death in that one episode of the Twilight Zone. Anyway, let me know your favorites.

aka "Lucy Butler" BEST VILLAIN IN TV HISTORY.

But she wasn't really "Satan" per se, kinda an uber-demon like the 4 old guys in that comedy episode. But with 100% more badass.

I read thru all the posts in this thread, and I am pleased to see that someone gave the actress props from Passion of the Christ, she was phenomonal as Satan. I think it is a toss up between Peter Stormare in Constantine and her.

I'm in agreement with you. Different eras and interpretations but both well done.

I second Liz Hurley.
In the original Bedazzled, Raquel Welch played Lust, not the Devil, otherwise I'd pick her.
Second place is Jennifer Love Hewett in Shortcut to Happiness.

You guys are mad as hatters. Tim Curry in Legend. End of game, I win!

(but since he wasn't reeeeeeeeealy supposed to be satan, I guess I'll have to agree with Viggo in Prophecy. Something about the way he devoured that rose bud unnerved me.)
Oh, goodbye mama. I'll never do dishes again.

Damnit! I was planning to mention Tim! ;-) But you beat me too it! I totally agree, though. Tim Curry in Legend, is quite simply the best Devil/Satan going. No comparison. I agree with everyone mention Viggo in The Prophecy though. He makes a great impression in a small role.

There should of course be a special mention for Liz Hurley lol! ;-) And Ray Wise in Reaper is class lol! (I always thought Al in Devil's Advocate was too OTT.)

Has always been a favorite of mine. Deniro in Angel Heart was also good. Mortensen in Prophecy. Peter Stormare in Constantine.

I will say that its interesting that Byrne plaed a priest in Stigmata in what I believe was the same year as this one was released.

Props also to Eriq LaSalle in Crazy as Hell. That portrayal really plays with your head.

Clarence Williams III in "Tales From The Hood". Well, it was revealed that he was satan at the end of the film, but you have to see it to know what I mean.

Oh yeah! I forgot about Tales From the Hood. He DID make a hell of a satan.

Telly Savalas in "Lisa and the Devil"

reply

I totally agree. My pics are in agreement with the crowd;

John Glover, Brimstone. (Totally. Was my first thought when reading the title thread. That was a GREAT show. Buffy caught on and got big just after this show was cancelled, I think if it had come out later, it would've lasted longer on Buffy's coat-tails. Maybe a re-boot and an airtime after Supernatural?)

Tim Curry, Legend. (loved this movie as a pre teen. Classic devil. Horns an hooves, Tim Curry voice, liked killing unicorns, evil. 'Nuff said.)

Peter Stormare, Constantine ("I have stocks." Awesome line, creepy, petty AND had the bonus fly/float thing. And his nickname was 'Lou'.If you had Constantine's balls, that is.)

But my number one is still... (evil drumroll pls):

Viggo Mortensen, Prophecy. (if you haven't seen it, go find it. Viggo was an unknown at the time, but my friends and I all sat up and went "Who's THAT!? CREEEPY HOT in a disturbing, frightening way. Fun movie if you can ignore some mildly dated effects and like that kind of film.)

Thanks for mentioning Telly Savalas. He was superb and it's sad to see that only a few people know who he is.
