shareI had the same opinion when the show first debuted, and it was literally about a decade later when I started to watch reruns. At first I thought it was sick to create abuse scenarios as a kind of entertainment, but the simple drama of watching these people work while discovering perpetrators and establishing guilt won me over.
I still question the place in popular culture for all these depictions of abominable behavior, but I've come to appreciate the storytelling and drama created on SVU. It's kind of like watching Silence Of The Lambs or Don't Breathe. I think they are well done enough to be worth taking the time, but I don't begrudge anyone avoiding the grisly aspects of this sort of thing.
