Potentially more appeal to boys than girls...

But sadly many will be put of by the fact that the main character is a girl. I am a male and I think this movie is amazing the way it is and has much of the creepy macabre stuff that boys probably like more than girls. I reckon it could have possibly been more sucessful with a boy main character for this reason, not that I would personally change anything about it.

Coraline is based on a book, so it wouldn't make a lot of sense to change the main character from a girl to a boy. This change would be too big.
I guess the directors tried to make this movie more interesting for boys by implementing Wybie. His character does not exist in the book.

That's just weak songwriting. You wrote a bad song, Petey.

The fact that Katniss is a female hasn't seemed to hurt The Hunger Games.

Hey who says girls can't like creepy things?

lol I'm just teasing you filmmagnet, I get what you're saying but I'm a woman and I love horror movies and things that are scary and creepy so I think both boys and girls could love Coraline equally.

Not every little girl is into rainbows and unicorns.

To be honest what Coraline reminds me of the most...and is the main reason I love it, is that it harkens back to the classic Grimms Fairy Tales...think Snow White or Hansel and Gretel... the ORIGINAL tales before they got all sweetened up and softened.

The classics could be very dark and creepy.

And for me that's what Coraline represents, the days when wicked witches were truly wicked and not just misunderstood, and when their was real danger for the hero/heroine.

Because as any child knows you can't reason with the monster under your bed.

I think it's an amazing movie for everyone!!

I think you are onto a point, but that you're missing the point by saying that the movie should have had a boy protagonist.

Let's say that if I had a son and he liked this movie... then I would kick his ass for liking such a girly movie. Whereas if my daughter liked it then I would be happy with that.

I think that should explain where the appeal lies in this movie and the story that goes with it.

I don't agree. There are more difference between kids than just their gender. I have two daughters. My ten-year-old pretty soon dismissed this film as "boring" and went up to her room to read a book instead, while my eight-year-old daughter was fascinated by it. The next day she admitted that she had had nightmares based on the film, but she definitely did not regret watching it.

It seems to me that Gaiman based the story loosely on Vasilisa the Brave in the house of Baba Yaga. To change the sex of the main would never have worked.

I agree. And unlike boys watching female protagonists, girls are very open to watching male protagonists. It would probably have been more successful.

I met Cinderella once... she's actually kind of a bitch.

"I agree. And unlike boys watching female protagonists, girls are very open to watching male protagonists. It would probably have been more successful."

And there's the big problem. Unfortunately we still live in a very sexist society, one that teaches everyone that it's considered "cool" to like all things "male-related" but it's considered "uncool" and you're looked down upon for liking "female-related" stuff. It's disturbing to know that we still live in a cultural that teaches us to hate everything to do with females. Even females are taught this way. It's REALLY sad. There is really no difference between males and females anyway, it's just that we have basically been culturally brainwashed to believe that girls and boys should like one thing over another. Boys and girls can like the same things. So lot's of girls do love this film. And there are actually lot's of young boys that love this film too. There are in fact boys that are open-minded and do not mind watching a film or reading a book with a female protagonist. And they can in fact love it.

But you know another reason why more girls might be open minded to watching male protagonists? And this may be a bit controversial; but it's because in many ways, we don't really have many choices. There aren't that many films with really good female leads. They make more films with male protagonists. So we just go with what society gives to us. Male leads are sort of what they call the "default" of the industry.

Totally agree. It's very sad and annoying.
