Was I the only one reminded of Heart of Darkness?
I'm curious to know.
I thought there were disturbing parallels in theme and atmosphere.

Yeah there were parrallels, not neccessarily disturbing though. To be honest I wouldn't have minded if the likeness had been greater, like making Arthur a bit more Kurtz like or something...
MMM-HMMMM. Now that IS a tasty burger
Hm. Both have colonial settings/themes and Arthur is a bit Kurtz-like, but beyond that ? I'd like to know why you think that.
shareThose were my thoughts throughout, especially when the captured Aboriginals were describing Arthur to the captain. I immediately thought of Kurtz.
shareYes, I also got some Heart of Darkness (or Apocalypse Now)-vibes from it.
shareyeah, mainly the atmosphere, and the lead aiming to bring down the bad guy.
apocalypse now ant this one are quite different approaches on the Heart of Darkness theme, and I think its high time for the novel of Josef Conrad to be turned in to a movie for the big screen.
Yeah, I thought about Joseph Conrad while watching. The whole "bringing civilization to the untamed places"theme, very much. Martha's clothing, and her paging through a fashion magazine seemed to echo The Heart of Darkness's use of lace as a theme of civilization.

It reminded me a lot of BLOOD MERIDIAN by Cormac McCarthy...
WHAT'S IN THE BOX??????
You know, I love Heart of Darkness. It is one of my favorite books. And though I didn't think of it while I was watching the movie, I definitely see the parallels, now that you mention it. In fact, I feel stupid for not seeing it before. Good catch.
shareUtter nonsense. There is no reason to feel stupid for not seeing it before. That doesn't me you are stupid. I'd suspect the opposite is closer to the truth. All that it says about you is that you enjoyed (I assume you enjoy it) the film for what it was. As a singular and unique piece. That there are parallels can be said of many of the 'bad guy that has become too Evil-Evil Dude living in a Robber's Roost type place where everyone is scared of him-some friend/acquaintance/family has to bring him in' films made of the years. But even if they were not. While it is a good catch and good topic to discuss. You shouldn't feel stupid.
shareHeart of Darkness was made into a movie...albeit for TV
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110002/
I was definitely reminded by Arthur of Brando's performance as Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.
shareYes I think there were some good parallels now that you mention it...Arthur was Kurtz like in his mystery and local legend...the area he was, was "impenetrable" by the white men, just like the area Kurtz was in the jungle...and both HofD and this film seem to reveal the darkness of man's heart
shareSo true.. and I thought I was the only one who remembered Heart of Darkness.
shareYeah very true, Arthur was very much Kurtz in my eyes, the scene with the captured aborigines and the description they gave suddenly brought HOD to mind.
"sometimes its only the madness that makes us what we are"
