Buddhists? Are you offended...

Does anyone feel that this film offends the Buddhist religion? This pop star who claims to be a Buddhist is up there shaking her a**, flaunting her body, and using a statue of the Buddha as a stage decoration. I am a Buddhist, and I understand that this film was just supposed to highlight the rediculousness of the singer, but I couldn't help feeling uneasy, seeing her appear out of a Buddhist monument. I liked the film, but I do feel a little offended.

reply

YES! A topic about this!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way.

I was already annoyed by Cora's slutty dance moves and skimpy outfits. But when she came out of the Buddha statue I was extremely offended. I felt like they were treating the Buddhist religion as a joke.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely enjoyed the film. But at the same time I definitely felt disrespected.

reply

Actually, they were treating her commitment to Buddhism as a joke, not Buddhism itself.

reply

I agree with several posters here like lewisworld. The whole thing was meant to be satirical and funny.

reply

They were making fun of Cora and her treatment of Buddhism. It's all about how shallow she is and how she totally doesn't get it, just like so many other pop stars and other celebrities who "find God" or embrace some religion and then use it as a prop in their act.

The statement was not about Buddhism. It was about the misappropriation of it.

I'm surprised that seems to have eluded so many people, but when it comes to matters religion and belief, people do tend to be pretty attached and they do tend to get offended easily.

Namaste.

this? this was nothing. you should have seen this video game in the very early 90s where the final stage was the hero coming across a statue of the buddha, and the calm demeanour of the statue suddenly transformed into the most hideous thing ever. strike the buddha and you win the game. i was in my element.

p/s: i wouldn't think these things would matter to buddhists, because they do not stand in the way between you and the dharma.

Do good Buddhists get offended?

I'm not a Buddhist and I'm still offended.

reply

The Buddhism was just a tool to show how ridiculous celebrities can be. Like the ones that thank "God" on the awards shows but do not think God in their life. Offense at this would be a mistake but people look to get offended these days over any little thing.

reply

The giant Buddha statue on the stage would not fly in a Buddhist country but otherwise no big deal. Most of the singer girl's phoney pseudo-religious behaviour was more aimed at Hinduism. Shanti Shanti =)

reply

Indeed .... could be aimed at Hinduism ... but then Shanti Shanti means Peace Peace .... so maybe the slam is aimed towards pie ... or a piece of pie ... or maybe at getting a piece ... so it's really about making fun of sex .... so the whole thing is an underground message for people to become celibate.

Pretty slick!!

Buddhists typically don't waste a lot of negative energy on things like being offended.

reply

I'm not Buddhist but can I be offended too? Ya know, join in with the rest of the gang for a while until I find something I really care about?

reply

I thought it was particularly shocking and a bit funny when Cora started grinding and humping with a guy dressed up as a Buddhist monk in the concert scene.

reply

Of course you were offended. The sun couldn't rise and fall in the sky without someone being offended. It's the new world religion.

reply

Rather silly that here on Thailand TV channels the scenes from this movie including images of any Buddhist statues are cut or blurred out. The whole final song sequence is chopped to bits to avoid showing any Buddha images and/or Cora's skimpy outfit. Censorship in this country is just pathetic, and meanwhile about three blocks from my front door is an entire street lined with bar girls in mini skirts and short-shorts with their bits hanging out, and there are several large Buddhist temples on the same street. Go figure.

wanna see a similar scene with Islam as the background

Then probably terrorists would've blown up the film studios and decapitate the whole crew.
