How the hell do 'poor' people get so fat?

Not only in this movie, but everywhere. I see it every day... huge obese women carting huge obese children to the welfare office. Getting and staying that fat has got to cost a fortune.

They eat cheap fattening foods.

It has been proven that exercise does not have jack to do with actual weight loss, and if you are calling me an idiot, I would think twice about it.
I lost 80 pounds in a year, and yes, I do work out every day. But that alone would not have caused me to lose the weight. I had to calorie count and watch what I ate in order to lose the pounds. All working out does is burn fat and create muscle. It does NOT make you lose weight.

Yeah, but you're an adult. I stated before that I lost seventy pounds. Well, before losing the weight, I went to the gym 4x a week religiously, and never saw any results. My eating habits offset any benefit my workouts were having. Like you, I had to add diet into the mix. I joined Weight Watchers and then the weight flew off.

However, it's different with little kids. Kids have much faster metabolisms, are much more active, and we all know they can eat sugary crap all day and be bouncing off the walls and skinny as rails. Well, that's the way it was when I was a kid, and I was a chubby kid. I remember being frustrated that I ate no more than my peers (in fact, usually THEY ate more) but had a weight problem and I couldn't figure out why. Simple...I was a big reader, and when I wasn't reading I was watching TV. I sat on my rear end while everyone else my age was out playing.

Adults do need the synergy of diet and exercise to lose weight. Little kids, however, just need to be active. We've become a society that relies on all sorts of gadgets to do everything for you that used to burn up calories...even such mundane things as rolling down a car window, raising the garage door, or changing the channel on the TV set...and now we have kids spending their days playing video games instead of running around outside, plus PE classes and sports are the first to go when schools have to do budget cuts.

I am saying you can't just work out like a fiend and expect to lose the weight. Neither can you just count calories and get in SHAPE (big difference). It takes work, both with watching what you eat and getting exercise. Working out alone won't cut it.

I agree. It has to be a lifestyle change, not just a "diet."

reply

There's a difference between starving yourself and eating responsibly. (ex: eating a bag of chips vs eating a handful of nuts; candy vs fruit) What you're referencing are fad diets or crash diets, solely created to get a quick result with no lasting value, which is actually more dangerous at times than never going on a diet at all.

But if someone's metabolism can't keep up with the calories and part of that has to do with the type of food they eat, then all working out does is attempt to break even. Which may be ok if you're trying to maintain weight, but not if you're trying to lose weight and/or get healthy.

Besides, eating healthier helps with work-outs.

Do you know how hard it is to have a political argument with a naked man?

Poor eating habits (chips,chicken,ham/bologna sandwiches,pickles,candy,bacon, eggs,soul food,Excessive fried food,fast food...on an everyday basis) + no excercise = Obese

the worst food is the cheapest, plus they go around stealing fried chicken

Poor people eat cheap food...nutritionally deplete of wholesome nutrients, filled with carba and high frucose corn syrup. Scientifically proven to increase body fat.

Research proves it to be true. And I am not upper-middle class, by the way, and I definitely am not an elitist. Check into some studies on our food supply - read Fast Food Nation, Food Inc. and the Omnivore's Dilemma - among others - and then tell me if you still maintain that this is all "bunk."

I don't believe that poor people have no responsibility to themselves and cannot help the things that happen top them. But I agree with the summary of calii927-1's first post for all the reasons the poster stated. I don't read that post and say, "It's society's fault."

I haven't read all the posts but it's definitely true that healthier foods cost more at the grocery store than cheap junk foods. And being poor also affects a person's self-esteem.

Precious did mentioned McDonald's at least 80 times. It's cheap and fast. I hope that answered your question.
