How the hell do 'poor' people get so fat?

Not only in this movie, but everywhere. I see it every day... huge obese women carting huge obese children to the welfare office. Getting and staying that fat has got to cost a fortune.

What the *beep*, I'm an educated person and would not usually talk like this, but there is so much ignorance in such a short post I don't even know how to begin to clean it out. Just.. try to be less ignorant. This is the best advice I can give you.

I cannot believe this is a serious question.

I'd say it's more expensive to buy fresh fruit, vegetables and meat all the time than it is to buy crappy unhealthy canned/frozen *beep*

It really is strange. I have a friend who is quite obese, and quite poor as well. I wondered about it for ages until she took me on a 'grocery trip'; all she bought with 50 dollars was bags of chips, cookies, and bottled pop. Atleast she bought a toothbrush and toothpaste too.

Wow I am amazed at how expensive groceries are in the US
150-200 $ for a cart of cheap stuff and 450-500 for healthy food? Here in Germany it's more like 80$ and 250$ !

We have the discount supermarkets everywhere (they sell cheap "no brand" products), it's strange why are there no supermarkets in US inner cities? More people living there = more customers?

BUT going to fast food restaurants is unaffordable here if you are living on welfare or have a low income job
8$ for a big menu so you are not hungry anymore... that would be over 9 servings of pasta with tomato sauce or 9 frozen pizza at the supermarket!
Some fast food (asian for ex.) are cheaper than McDonalds etc. but it's still luxury

Meat is very expensive except maybe the cheapest kind of sausage (fat!) (let's not even talk about fish...), vegetables and fruit also very expensive, affordable is only what's on sale, mostly apples, pears, carrots, lettuce
Milk & milk products and eggs pretty expensive as well

High fat / carb / sugar products are always more expensive than nutritious foods
For example I really wonder why 1 (no brand) 100 grams chocolate bar (0.45$), which needs cocoa imported from overseas (transport costs!) is cheaper than 2 apples (~0.25$ each) from our region? Crazy world...

Government set the welfare rate percentages for rent, electricity, transport, health care far too low , so you have to pay for them from the food percentage, which in turn makes healthy eating impossible

i cant believe there are actually people asking this question... Because bad, fat food is cheap. Welcome to Mcdonalds. Eating healthy is expensive... not getting fat. Hiring a nutritionist is expensive, so is going to the gym.
Besides its a defence mechanism, eating can make you feel good, even when theres no reason at all to feel good. So can drinking and taking drugs. Thats why people in bad situations resort to these things...

I just did some math. 200 food stamps (which I believe is the average amount that an individual receives per month) can buy approximately 456,000 calories worth of ramen noodles. That's 15,200 calories per day.
