How the hell do 'poor' people get so fat?

Not only in this movie, but everywhere. I see it every day... huge obese women carting huge obese children to the welfare office. Getting and staying that fat has got to cost a fortune.

welfare checks and food stamps.

I'm sure someone already said this (I didn't bother reading all of the posts) but the cheapest food is often the most unhealthy. If people wanted to eat cheap everyday, they could, but they'd be sacrificing nutrition. Check out the documentary "Killer At Large" which is about obesity in America. They get into the dynamics of income matched with nutrition. I live in DC and if you go to the wealthier areas like Georgetown and Dupont Circle, you'll find a lot of healthy, lean people. Then if you go to poorer areas like in South East and Anacostia, you'll find a lot of unhealthy, over-weight people.

Okay people saying that families who use food stamps buy frozen dinners & junk...maybe it's because they dont have TIME to cook? Poor (working people) bust their ass working overtime to pay the rent & other bills so I doubt they have time to buy all that healthy organic *beep* & make a gourmet meal.

i hope you choke on your bacardi & coke!

egoangel18, I get what you're saying, but I don't believe that to be true.

There are many pre-made healthy meals one could buy, so it's not an issue of time. The issue is that healthy food is much more costly than junk food, so people with low income, whether they want to or not, need to eat the cheaper, unheathy food to stretch their dollars.

Sugary drinks are much cheaper to buy than healthy juices. Starchy white bread is often less than whole-grain bread. If you wanted to get the same quantity of fruits and vegetables as a big bag of potato chips, you'll be spending double or more, and I'm not even talking organic.

I'd say "no time to buy healthy meals" would also mean "no time to buy unhealthy meals." There are even almost as much (if not just as much) healthy microwavable meals as there are unhealthy--they just cost much more and that's where the poor are stuck, not time.

Because the cheapest food is the food that's the most highly packed with calories...fast food joints.

People get fat because food is cheap on that side of the world. It has nothing to do with being rich or poor. Following your "logic" most asians would be fat. They arent.

Another problem is fatness brought onto children from their parents. The media has distort the view on humans. Not too many centuries ago fatness was a "good" sign. So yeah, in the end it comes down to what time we live in.

No alcohol, tobacco, drugs or fat food is what the government should enforce onto its citizens. It works but sadly only in a police state. Basically creating mankind 2.0 but humans arent ready for that yet. We need a disaster on this planet that basically wipes out the majority of mankind. Only then can we actually "learn" from our past.

That is possibly the most naive statement I have read on web today.

Protein heavy foods are expensive, carb heavy foods are extremely cheap. African American people(as well as Native American) are not suited for a grain based high carb diet, it leads to obesity, diabetes and results in no satiation(feeling full) so you constantly feel hungry even if you eat a large amount. But unfortunately these grain and surgery products are what cost the least amount at a grocery store. Precious has 2 things working against her, her body is designed for mostly protein and good fats and she's very poor so she can't afford these things. Also it's the 80's, the health and nutrition information back then was horrible.

poor people eat white bread - high calorie and cholestrol, fattening but cheap.

rich people eat wholemeal bread - no fat, no calorie or cholestrol, healthy but more expensive.

reply

o_O...Okay. There's no caloric difference between white or "wholemeal" bread in-fact both are very calorie-dense but low on nutrients(it's mostly sugar) and neither would have cholesterol. Cholesterol comes from animals. Both are carbohydrates and would both negatively affect blood sugar levels(causing the body to store fat) and both also contain gluten, which causes inflammation and damage to the gut lining(preventing satiation and absorption of nutrients). Neither would be beneficial for someone like Precious, whole-wheat or not.

Not too long ago, most poor people were not fat like that. There were not a lot of the additives in food that they have now. We are getting all sorts of chemicals, GMOs, God knows what that did not used to be in our food. For instance, commercial meat is loaded with growth hormones. They make you pay extra to put that stuff in, and then you pay even more for "organic" food that (at least you hope!) doesn't have it.

We are told that it's about eating too much and not enough exercise but then how did people do it in my day, 30-40 years ago? They were sitting on their rears in school, working in offices, the only thing that's changed is the food.

Let's just say that God doesn't believe in me.
