Did anyone else think Camron Diaz wasn't right for the role of the mom?

I don't know about anyone else, but I can't stand Camron Diaz. In my opinion, she can't act to save her life. She pretty much ruins every film that she's in. She doesn't fit the role of a mother. She's more suited to stupid comedies where the main character is a self-centered blonde bimbo. =\

Ignorance is toxic.

I agree with you but only that she wasn't right for this role, I don't think she is a bad actor though. After having read the book I thought someone more professional(lawyerly and motherly) looking would have been cast in this role. Cameron seemed more as if she should have been the sister maybe? Sally Field in her younger days would have been my idea or Susan Sarandon when she was younger too. Cameron never came off as the mom or the lawyer to me. If I hadn't read the book I think I might have been lost.

I think she did well in the role and I am someone who was against her playing Sara initially. She was able to break away from the usually ditzy-character that we are used to seeing her as and successfully play a stubborn, grief-stricken mother. The only problem I had was that she was a shade too young to play mother to kids in their mid to late teens while also being a lawyer. Someone in their mid-forties would have been better, in that respect.

I thought she was ok. The age thing did seem a little odd though, it really didn't look like she was old enough to have teenagers.

reply

She was born in 1972, in 2009 in this movie she would have been 37. She could COMPLETELY be the parent of teenagers and it not be untoward in the least. Not everyone waits until forty for their first born, lol.

reply

I said she didn't *look* old enough. I think she looked a bit younger than 37 (thought I think it was filmed when she was 36, if that makes a difference, lol). The older boy was I think 17. Maybe she had her first child at 20 and managed to finish college and then do law school while having two other children, one with leukaemia. But it's not very likely. So yeah it's just plausible but it didn't look believable because she looked too close in age.

I think Cameron Diaz looks much older than her age. She has deep lines in her face. I thought she was well into her 40's in this movie.

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

Honestly, she reminded me of how crazy and overprotective my mother is, especially when they were taking her to the beach, and she was flipping out. That is exactly how my mom used to be, and still is. Over worrier.

reply

Yeah but you are a 46 years old person, so I dont know who is wrong here.

reply

She surprised me. Initially, I thought that she wouldn't be able to pull it off. When I think of Cameron Diaz, the word "mom" is the farthest thing from my mind. However, I thought that she did well. She portrayed the desperate mom who will stop at nothing to save her child's life very well, IMO.

I'm rather indifferent about Cameron Diaz as an actress, but I did think she was completely miscast in this movie. I couldn't buy her as a lawyer, I couldn't buy her as a mother, and I couldn't buy her as someone that neurotic and obsessive.

The rest of the cast was at least fine. In fact, Abigail Breslin and Joan Cusack were excellent. But Cameron Diaz just didn't quite fit her role.

I agree with kmc-4. When I was reading the novel, I thought of Hope Davis as the mother, I don't quite know why.

reply

Why can't you just say, self-centered bimbo. Why add hair color? What does the color of someones hair have to do with anything?! Ugh, I'm sick of that stereotype!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

Very true. That irritated me, too (and no, I'm not blond).

But, seriously, she is a horrible actress in general. She does do better with roles that are supposed to be comedic and "ditzy". I could have seen a million other actresses in this role that would have been way better, but she didn't completely butcher it. I just didn't get the passion from her at all.

Great movie, though. Utterly depressing, but a great movie.
