Did anyone else think Camron Diaz wasn't right for the role of the mom?

I don't know about anyone else, but I can't stand Camron Diaz. In my opinion, she can't act to save her life. She pretty much ruins every film that she's in. She doesn't fit the role of a mother. She's more suited to stupid comedies where the main character is a self-centered blonde bimbo. =\

Ignorance is toxic.

I personally like Cameron Diaz, BUT I like her in light roles, I've always thought that was the only type of acting that suited her.

I was very surprised at her in this movie, I think she gave a great performance, acting was very very good.

BUT I think the casting was awful (with regards Sara), I could not buy her as the mother, something about it just didn't flow/fit/something well at all.

I never liked Cameron Diaz either, much for the same reasons the OP mentioned. Seen her on some talk shows and just scratched my head wondering how she is even in the biz. There hadn't been one thing I saw her in that I liked her in.

That said, I thought she did a really great job in this film. Sure, others would have been better in the role, perhaps a better fit, but to me there's no denying that for the most part, she did well. I was actually happy for her as I watched this.

Unlike most of you (I'm assuming), I only stopped on this movie BECAUSE of Cameron Diaz. I was channel-flipping and saw she was in it so I watched a few minutes (what I can say, I like looking at Cameron Diaz...). Anyway, I ended up watching the whole thing because it's actually a much different movie than what I thought it would be (more of a sprawling family drama than a 'chick flick').

I thought she was great... I was actually surprised by how good she was. Maybe those who read the book can't buy it because of a pre-conceived notion of that character, which happens, but otherwise I don't see how people can say she was terrible. I bought the desperation and pain and anguish she was giving off. And let's be fair, this is a pretty huge departure from what she usually does, so especially considering that, I thought she was good.

I thought the whole cast was great. I was actually surprised the movie didn't end up on the awards shows radar, they love stuff like that. If anything the girl playing Kate should have gotten a golden globe nomination or something.

The first one now will later be last, for the times they are a'changin'...

I was surprised seeing Cameron in the mom role, you wouldn't expect that if you look at her movie history. I can totally understand that she wanted to do something different for a change and she did a very good job on this one.
I disagree by the way that she ruins every film that she's in, did you not see There's something about Mary or the Holiday, or what about the Mask, she is so funny in those films, i think she can take any role! I totally love her!

I honestly think people just want to hate this woman. Seriously, criticising her for being whiny and controlling? Have any of you seen Being John Malkovich?

It's an ordinary high school day. Except that it's not.

reply

Yes, we've seen her in Being John Malkovich. ANYONE would have been better in that role.

reply

Agreed. She's just not natural.

Will I wait a lonely lifetime?
If you want me to, I will.

reply

Not natural? Do you mean she acts fake? She's always so fresh, open and real to me, but yet again, everybody is entitled to their opinion

Cameron Diaz was not my Sara Fitzgerald from the book, at all, and I'm not talking about looks. It's not entirely Diaz's fault, as she was just playing the part written for her, but in the book, I had a love/hate relationship with Sara. On one hand, I was appalled by her choices and actions, and on the other hand, I could feel for her and see why she acted that way. With the Sara in the movie, I just hated her. She was mean and had no concern for her youngest daughter. Plus Diaz just wasn't believable in that role.

She's been either a bitch or a bimbo in every movie she's done for some time, so her detestible character here seemed to fit her.
