Three issues I have with this show.

I enjoy the vibrance and upbeat nature of the show. It has some problems, though:

- Actors struggling with dialogue: I noticed this in Episode Three when on some occasion Spock and the ship's doctor jumbled their lines in some scenes making their dialogue indecipherable. Is it the nature of the lines, the speed at which they deliver them, accents or something else which is causing this issue?

- Not really a fan of the serial format linking episodes together.

- Too much time spent on character psychoanalysis.

Character analysis has been a hallmark of Trek since the beginning. I think its great we are getting that.

The serial format is, again, going back to original Trek. We have had a lot of arcs in recent series. I like arcs, but sometimes a series where episodes aren't tightly linked together can be fun. If nothing else, you aren't lost if you miss an episode.

No, it's episodic. You have to start with the pilot, especially the recap from Discovery.

I was a bit confused. I didn't watch Discovery so however this show gestated from it, it wasn't spelled out or clear at all. There were numerous references to it in the first ep. I was somewhat able to gleam what happened, but not really. That's a fail. Shows should exist on their own merit and be able to stand on their own two feet as a complete tale. I'm not understanding it right now. Somebody is going to watch this show on its own 50 years from now and still be just as confused. Like, what even IS Discovery? They never even state it was a starship. I had to know that already.

My biggest issue is the same issue I have with all new shows. Nobody behaves professionally. All the characters are written and behave like a bunch of teenagers on a field trip.

reply

This. Exactly.

reply

Seconded. The very best face to be put on it is the effect of a different style of command, but that does not adequately explain characters spending time in the most critical situations to discuss their personal lives...

On Kirk's ship, everyone was a professional who could be counted on in a crisis. They clashed sometimes, but only about what to do to counter the threat of the week, with Kirk getting the last word and trusting his crew to carry out his orders.

That style of show seems to be falling out of favor these days -- everyone has to have weaknesses and past traumas to deal with and talk about and try to get past.

But Strange New Worlds is still much better than Discovery or Picard.

I have only two issues with this show:

1) ALEX
2) KURTZMAN
