How about we all stop referring to Total Recall a remake. This latest adaptation (yes, it's based on a novella) is actually closer to "We Can Remember It For You, Wholesale" than the first adaptation, which was tooled about with so much, and so badly, to accommodate Arnie. Now, when you mention Total Recall you immediately think of the classic Schwarzenegger ham-fest instead of this wannabe sci-fi masterpiece (which I agree it is not). Giving the film a different name may have helped it, but then the same dumb audience that calls it a remake would have been then calling it a rip-off.
What many are missing is the point to this adaptation. With the new Total Recall, the aim was to try and make it as a bridge between Minority Report and BladeRunner, and try and create a singular universe, and a mass franchise around the works of Phillip K. Dick. So sad that it failed, and all parties pulled away. Now, all we have to look forward to is some half-baked retread of BladeRunner, and a dull continuation TV series of Minority Report.
