Ripped off bubble gum line from They Live

"here to chew bubble gum and kick ass... all out of bubble gum"

totally ripped off from They Live with Rowdy Roddy Piper (which was a much better film)

another cringe-worthy addition to the already terrible dialouge

reply

I thought the only flaw in them using that line is that They Live came out while Val was in prison, so they couldn't have seen it together. Otherwise, I could totally see them using it as an inside joke like that.

reply

That line LONG predates "They Live".

Where is it from?

reply

I don't know where it originated but I heard military guys in the '70s saying it.

Cool! It's a great line! I'm glad it wasn't just from a movie.

Duke Nukem

reply

They ripped it off from neither "They Live" nor Duke Nukem.

That line has been around forever and been used everywhere.

And I believe it is "gum" not "bubblegum".

reply

Nukem got it from They Live!

The line is taken from They Live but I didn't see it as a straight up rip, more as a tribute to the movie.

reply

^^This. Nukem definitely got it from They Live. I don't think that they ripped it off, at least I hope not. Maybe it was just a nod to the film.

"They Live" just change an old line. The real line is "I've come here to drink beer and kick ass, and we just ran out of beer!"

reply

Yep, I couldn't believe I heard the line, from They Live, also in this movie also. Plagarizing writer.

reply

"Ripped off"? "Plagiarizing writer?" Y'all really don't grasp the concept of how existing work can be used to create something entirely new, do you?

reply

"paying homage to", "referencing", and "inspired" are all terms that these posters need to look up and become familiarized with.... please ......

The industry dont give a *beep* about you, but it couldn't make a dime without you

reply

^Exactly.

And this whole topic was started by someone who obviously just wanted to show he/she knows something about films. Probably a teenage douchebag doing a film course, because, for anyone older, the appropriate response to this topic is "no *beep* sherlock". And yes, the "teenage douchebag" insult was inspired by Wheatus :D

reply

No sh-t man.

But, yeah, the two times this line is quoted, are probably the very lowest points of the film. The way it`s delivered... ridiculous and lame in a particularly pitiful sorta way, bloody begging for a knowing chuckle from the audience.

It's called an homage. They were not claiming that line to be their own. The characters were quoting "They Live"

Valentine likely saw the movie on Showtime or STARZ while serving time.

I too remember the phrase in one form or another from back then in the real world but I guess it doesn't matter unless it was in a movie or some other make believe thing.
