This is a nearly 20 ft monster that attacks unprovoked and can tear you apart.
This isn't entirely true. Sure, most attacks are completely unexpected, but the sharks aren't just randomly biting things.
Sharks wil attack anything that could potentially be food. Sometimes it's the clothing a person wears, jewelry, or even a surfboard with a person that can look like a fish, turtle, etc. It may sound strange, but after seeing a shape (silhouette) at the surface that looks like their usual pray or the shininess of jewelry that can resemble the reflectiveness of certain scales, etc is more than enough of a reason for the animal to attack, at least in their mind of instinct.
In addition, most surfers and other frequent ocean activity enthusiasts know such risks and the ways to reduce unwanted results. However, people can make mistakes or aren't aware of particular details: prominent shark feeding areas and so on.
P.S. I don't feel bad for the shark's death, although, I'm not advocating killing them either.
