Almost certainly yes. It was also just another notch in the continual escalation of his controlling demeanor, which really freaked Ann out in the end as she resigns herself to living with this borderline psychopath character while playing the organ. At least that's what I took from it, but the beauty of that scene, and most of the movie in fact, is you can make of it what you will.

I was really pleasantly surprised by this movie, of which I had no expectation whatsoever.

Whats the debate about? Its clear as day Loomis let go of the rope. Why on earth would Caleb leave lol. Suddenly he honor. No way he was leaving tbat sweet fresh young milage poon, please.. He definitely would have killed Loomis after the wheel was finished. Loomis just happened to get the drop on him. He saved him the first time off of reaction, then figured it out, it had to be done. Its a cold world..

Negotiating with Caleb to leave would have been useless. As soon as saving caleb, whos to say he wouldnt have killed him right then and there. Loomis was weaker than Caleb and a lot younger.

Kudos to Loomis for doing what had to be done

reply

100% yes.

Leading up to that scene, after caleb and ann had sex, Loomis asks caleb about his plans, and asks about that town caleb had planned to go to, caleb says "Well like you said mr loomis, there probably isnt anything there" then we get the scene where they are working, and caleb slips and you see loomis and caleb looking at each other as loomis is holding him up by the rope. then we cut to back at home.

You also see loomis standing on the edge contemplating jumping.

It's pretty clear that he let caleb falls and by taken with the water wherever the water ran off too.

Loomis DID NOT KILL Caleb.

But he asked him to leave.

1. Ann pushing the glass over the table with a book without it breaking is the metaphor.

2. Loomis has been open about his love for Ann. Caleb does not love Ann, he was attracted to her but did not want to stay in a farm and try to rebuild as much as Loomis and Ann. Remember that conversation during a meal and Caleb remarked how Ann sounds like Loomis. Loomis has a big plan to create infrastructure AT THE VALLEY which is Ann's home...Caleb didn't want to stay long term....

3. Letting go of Caleb whilst on the top of the waterwall signified a 20 foot drop, an adult sized man falling that distance would destroy a car's roof including the A, B and C pillars... All steel materials.
The water trough they created would NOT stand a chance... The wheel would of also been damaged.
And logistically... How would Loomis fetch the body without a suit, fix the wheel and trough and not get sick? We all saw him get sick quickly at the start of the film after jumping in the water.

What happened is.
Caleb knew Loomis loved Ann, he knew Loomis and Ann has big plans at the valley. He just wanted water at the start, but they took him in and gave him a place to stay. But Caleb's intention is to go to Anson. He didnt want to stay and be a malcontent presense whilst alienating Loomis. Caleb realized Loomis is a good man after saving him twice... So he left without saying goodbye because Ann would of convinced him to stay and he didnt want to be convinced to stay either.

The last scene where Loomis felt bad wasn't remorse or guilt but merely withdrawn because he knew that Ann wanted Caleb to stay.

Yes, I think John killed Caleb.

I think Caleb was already "stalking" Ann for a few days before finally he showed up.

1. One night the dog scratching the door as if there is something out there, the next morning Ann confuse as she lost some eggs. It's Caleb.

One or two days passing by.

2. Now there is a guy in the chapel while Ann play the organ. The dog approaching him, but Ann didn't see him. It's Caleb.

One or two days passing by.

3. Now Ann meet Caleb, which is because the dog run to Caleb.
It seems the dog already familiar with Caleb for an amount of time.

I don't think John will think Caleb is the type of guy who will say to John : "OK... if you want me to leave then I leave, Sir" if he saves Caleb from falling.

The first time is John's reflect.
The second time John has the chance to think : "you won't leave even after I save you and then ask you to leave", so he let Caleb fall.

Anyway, the ending is open for any opinion.
So probably at the second time, John hold the rope and say "you leave now, if you don't leave I let you fall". Then Caleb say "OK boss" :).

Yep that sums it up pretty nicely

"Some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best intentions"

From the evidence available I think no. Caleb had on the suit so there was no way for his body to be recovered/hidden without suffering severe sickness. Simple

I am surprised so many people think Caleb escaped when the story is so easy to understand.

This move is a retelling of the story of Cain and Able. In the story Cain kills Able because he is jealous and thinks God loves Able more and God knows about this but still continues to love him because God loves everyone. He is still punished though and is forced to walk the earth until he dies. In this movie, Ann is God, Caleb is Able and John is Cain. John and Caleb compete for Ann's love, like the story of Cain and Able and John gets jealous and thinks Ann loves Caleb more, even though she loves them both the same and then he kills Caleb. John then goes back to Ann and tells her that Caleb left. Ann obviously knows what actually happened based on how hes acting and even though its not shown in the movie Ann asks John if he killed Caleb and John confesses and then Ann kicks him out and hes forced to leave. An exact retelling of the story of Cain and Able.
