not a bad opening for type of movie, but it was over hyped, and way too expensive for a niche film , it won't make money

reply

WRONG, as always!

so it a super flop? and will lose lots of money? its 55m budget and add another 50m marketing, the best case scenario is 100m worldwide, not enough. It is opening similar to Air another sports related title by Amazon , what do you think it makes , lol

Held pretty well in its 2nd weekend -- 49% drop -- and foreign is solid

The issue is they had a $55 million budget. They need $138 million for a good profit (budget multiplied by 2.5).

The movie shouldn’t have been so expensive

Money that they generate overseas often doesn’t go to the filmmakers and studios. They get max 20% of the gross from China. So you need to watch domestic gross

55 million isn't really that big by modern standards. If it breaks even in theaters it's a win for the studio, these days. They can make a good profit on stream, home video.

"Money that they generate overseas often doesn’t go to the filmmakers and studios."

That's false. Less money doesn't mean zero money. Then you quoted the worst split of all the foreign markets for a film that wasn't released in China. The truth is that we rarely find out the details unless there's a post-mortem, and we rarely get those for non-tent poles. And the often quoted 2.5x takes the typical splits, worldwide, into account -- but it's still a crude method.

But I didn't say a thing about profitability, just that it had a decent weekend hold rather than falling off a cliff. And its weekday numbers were better than expected as well. It's legging slightly better than typical.
