Another 'Diverse' Historical Film

I don't get it.

Is pretending that Britain was always a multicultural, multiracial society meant to make everyone embrace it today or something?

What's the thinking here? What are they doing? Why?

Can't we embrace multiculturalism whilst simultaneously acknowledging that this isn't how things were in the 1920s?

I couldn't agree more. The casting of black actors as people who were white in real life was the only thing wrong with the film for me; it was hilarious.
Spoiler -I suspect that jail was an improvement on Edith's life with her father!

reply

I agree. Were there black judges then?

reply

There were people of color in England back then!

reply

Of course there were, but very few and they were living on the margins of society. There were no Indian policewomen in the 1920s. The first white policewoman only appeared in 1915.

reply

It's not a documentary. Just reinterpreting the past to make it more relatable to modern audiences.

reply

Relatable to what? The demographic in question hardly watches these type of films and really doesn’t care who is in the cast. So staying historically correct isn’t wrong.

reply

Yeah, i like to call this type of casting “Minorities in inexplicable places”.

Please keep fantasy in fantasy films.
