Decent, but not great

Just got home from seeing The House With A Clock In Its Walls. It was directed by Eli Roth and stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Owen Vaccaro. It is a family fantasy/comedy about a boy in the 1950s who goes to live with his uncle in a mysterious, magical house. I thought it was an alright family adventure, though nothing spectacular. The cast does a good job and elevates the material, but the film could have used more humour and more action. There are some good moments, but it felt like it goes on a little too long. I enjoyed it for what it was, but don't think I would likely watch it again. I rate The House With A Clock In Its Walls a decent 7/10.

I couldn’t say better myself, while I enjoyed the amazing cast and the “Harry Potter” feeling, I thought it wasn’t that special. Agree with a 7/10.

the kid ruined it for me. He was totally miscast. Terrible choice. I got super bored watching him midway movie, just fell asleep several times. AND I FUCKING ENJOY FANTASY MOVIES.
Harry Potter this was not. Not even close.
Even "Sorcerer's Apprentice" was more enjoyable than this.

Completely agree Alex (295). Nothing against the kid but he ruined it for me too. I watched the first 15 minutes and turned it off. Going to watch Harry Potter for the umpteenth time.

I thought the kid was adorable and the dynamic between Ms. Blanchett and Mr. Black was interesting

The best film of its type -- empowering a kid amidst magic and quirky characters -- that I've seen.
