In hindsight, did Carrie Fisher look ill here and in "The Force Awakens"?

She seemed more tired, frail and haggard (and had that noticeable "old lady smoker voice" instead of the faux British accent/Rosalind Russell imitation as in the original trilogy). Granted, she was at least 30 years older since "Return of the Jedi" and General Leia admittedly has a more matronly quality in the latter movies, but Carrie just looks sad and vulnerable in most of her scenes. I mean, she was 60 at the time that she passed, but she could've easily passed off as 80-85.

reply

It's no secret she did not live a healthy lifestyle, physically or mentally. She has a noticeable lack of blocking and business to do in her scenes that are always abbreviated. Just a couple of lines then cut.

reply

She looked a bit pale and tired during her space walk.

Part of me wishes that they had done the sequel trilogy about a decade and a half or so earlier. Carrie still reasonably looked and sounded like herself (and not a fragile elderly woman with a harsh, gruff sounding voice) or at least what we knew of her as Leia here:

Should have done the sequel trilogy in 99, 02 and 05. With larger roles going to Ford, Fisher and Hamill and introducing the next gen as a supporting cast. I'd like to of seen Lucas and Spielberg team up for these, possibly with Francis Ford Coppola as a director too.

I didn’t enjoy seeing a drugged up Carrie Fisher or elderly Han Solo (acting like a younger Han Solo) in the Disney movies, Hamill looked the part as Luke but they wasted his character.

reply

Didn't you know? Modern filmmaking is all about wasting good stories and characters.

reply

Oh my bad, I was just about to watch Terminator Genisys too! :)

reply

Ha! I've never seen it.

reply

DON'T!

I promise.

yeah that would've been the better outcome (with Natalie Portman/Rey, Ewan/Poe, Neeson/Hux?, Christopher Lee/Snoke, but no Hayden as Kylo tho! Maybe they could've got a young Christian Bale) Fisher would've still looked like an older Leia and Ford like he did in What Lies Beneath

and then they'd be doing the Prequels now (probably alot different to what they were with Daisy/Padme, Driver/Anakin, Gleeson/ObiWan, Von Sydow/QuiGonn )

Yes, I think she did seem frail. Just as an observation - I was perplexed by a close-up when she/Leia was in command on the ship - there was a notable twitch in her upper lip as she was contemplating something. I have seen her in a number of interviews over prior months from the last five or so years of her life, and sometimes you could see a stiffness/twitch in her face which might be related to her health. Also, a certain line she says to Poe in a doorway seemed muffled to me - I didn't understand it. It was a complete contrast to her younger self as we saw her in films and interviews.

That said, I've read that Rian Johnson had a great time talking to her for hours about script ideas and literature - she was gregarious in his experience. Mark Hamill says something similar in his relationship with her - witty, sharp, argumentative.

Certain lines sound strange like they are spoken through clenched dentures. I can’t recall if Carrie had a stroke? Her voice is for sure not the same. Reminds me of Bob Saget on Fuller house trying to play Danny Tanner but his voice is just to raspy now so he just plays Danny like himself. LOL and no, in no way am I comparing Bob Saget to Carrie acting wise, I just mean the voice situation.

reply

I also wondered to myself if Carrie's voice had this weirdly sharp, slurry tone in her latter years (as if she either had dentures, had a stroke, or was under the influence).

reply

If she had a stroke it was never made public (and she made EVERYTHING public) but her speech did change, and not just by dropping a couple of octaves like older lady smokers' do. She started slurring her S's some time in midlife, who knows why. Maybe she had dental problems or her psych meds affected her speech.

As to how she looked, mainly she looked like she'd had a lot of plastic surgery. Especially in TFA, it was really noticable there.

Now that I think about it, I do wonder if that was partially the reason why we were introduced to the Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern's character) character as a way to take some of the weight off of Carrie Fisher. They really wrote themselves into a corner however by having Holdo "heroically sacrifice" herself while keeping Leia alive at end (when it perhaps, should've been the other way around).

She looked and sounded awful. It's obvious her screen time was kept to a bare minimum because she was not up to par at any level. I actually though to myself when watching it that if she looked that bad wearing movie makeup (which is notoriously thick / heavy) there must have been something seriously wrong.

I heard a theory that losing weight quickly for this film was a big factor in her deteriorating health and then death.

reply

I keep hearing that in the next movie, Leia of the original "Big Three" was going to be the main focal point (just like Han was in The Force Awakens and Luke was in The Last Jedi). Even had Carrie not passed away, entrusting her to be the main heart and soul of next movie would've been awfully daunting for a woman in her then physical state.

reply

Now that I think about it, she looked very frail, frailer than you'd ever expect Princess Leia to look. You'd expect Leia to age fabulously, her beauty matured by time but undimmed, her energy and spirit intact, with none of Carrie Fisher's real-life health problems.

But the fact is, even if Princess Leia's spirit and humor were intact, she'd been through a hell of a lot in the last few decades, what with losing the Republic and her marriage going kaput and her son being a useless twerp. She was never physically robust even when young, I suppose I can believe that time could take a toll on her body, if never on her mind. Because she's still got it mentally through the two Disney movies, just as fabulous and brilliant and fearless and determined and righteous as she ever was. I just adore her.

reply

She looked really old, frail and very hunchback for some reason, way older than she was. Most people I know couldn't believe she was 60, but way older. Now we know she wasn't sober, probably wasn't sober for years, who knows. The scary part for me is that she was not diagnosed with any life threatening condition like heart disease, as far as I know, but all signs of imminent death were there, shortness of breath, lack of agility and so on, I mean she looked it.

Forty years of drug abuse. Wikipedia has lots on her poor health: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrie_Fisher#Death

On January 9, 2017, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued a death certificate that stated "cardiac arrest/deferred" as the cause of death. More tests were expected.[125] In a June 16, 2017, news release, the Los Angeles County coroner's office said that the exact cause of death could not be determined, but sleep apnea and the buildup of fatty tissue on the walls of arteries were among the contributing factors.[126] A full report from June 19, 2017, stated that Fisher had cocaine in her system, as well as traces of heroin, other opiates, and MDMA. The report also stated that the investigation was unable to determine when she had taken the drugs, and whether they contributed to her death.[127] Her daughter Billie Lourd stated that Fisher "battled drug addiction and mental illness her entire life [and] ultimately died of it.
