What also infuriates me is this flip-flopping bullshit: first everyone complains about Abrams...then Rian takes a dump on The Last Jedi and everyone hates him...now Abrams take another dump on Star Wars and suddenly they're all praising Rian and wanting him back again. What the actual fck? The Last Jedi goes from "turd" to "underrated masterpiece" all of a sudden. Uh, no--both Rian and Abrams shit the bed. What's with all this retro-grade suddenly reaffirmed love for Rian Johnson?
This happens a lot in fan circles. Reminds me of the Hangover Trilogy. They all bitched that Part 2 was "too much like Part 1" and then bitched when Part 3 did something different.
It's like their brains can't hold multiple thoughts at the same time. And also, everything has to be inflated in black and white and there can't be any grey area.
It's the same with Lucas - many of the people who dislike the DT/Disney are now proclaiming the PT as a great triumph, and Lucas to be essentially flawless. I think the prequel trilogy is objectively flawed in multiple ways and certainly not an ideal follow-up to the OT. However it isn't inherently disrespectful and looks a lot better after these current films... that doesn't elevate it to an OT-level masterpiece though.
Lucas also did some seriously messed up shit that stays with us today. Like restricting the release of the original films everyone fell in love with, even going so far as to apparently destroy the original prints to permanently push his revised editions. We still don't even have a proper anamorphic/restored DVD release, nonetheless a Blu-ray. This is unforgivable.
He also forced Spielberg to do the alien crap in Indy 4, and we all know how that turned out. Regardless, just because the Disney trilogy sucks ass, doesn't mean Lucas and his creations are now perfect. And you don't have to like Ruin Johnson to dislike Jar Jar Abrams and vice versa, you can think they both are hacks who royally fucked up.
So yeah, it annoys me to see this short-sighted, black and white mentality, even from those who are against Disney Star Wars.
Well said! I've always held the prequels in low regard and only really love the original trilogy. That hasn't changed. What the Sequel Trilogy did was allow me to at least see that the prequels, for all their faults, still contained that "magic" that is simply nonexistent in the ST. They're still mediocre Star Wars films but I can at least appreciate that they carried at least some of that Star Wars magic now that I've seen how bad things can get with the ST.
