Morricone's music Oscar

I think its quite funny that this movie won the music Oscar when big portion of the score was borrowed from John Carpenter's The Thing which in turn was a Razzie nominee in 1983 for the same music...

That is quite amusing, true...

While The Hateful Eight clearly wasn’t one of his great achievements it was nice to see him win a competitive Oscar. The opening suite is memorable and presumably clinched it for him.

This is quite ironic. I was very happy for him nevertheless.

RIP Ennio.. music genius

And by "a big portion of the score" you mean exactly 2 parts of the movie where pieces from The Thing score (by Morricone) are used, and an entire majority of the rest of the movie where Morricone's original Hateful Eight score was used?

reply

Well, how big portion, it also depends on how much original score was written for this movie. I have a recollection that not very much. I'm not certainly going to rewatch the movie and clock the score for this thread. But I'm sure you're willing to do that. Thanks in advance.

The original theme gets played quite a few times throughout the movie, and in many variations.

The Thing excerpts are just in two parts: when they are running the rope to the bathroom through the crazy snowstorm, and the whole sequence when the poison is revealed. Both really cool moments that go with the almost 30-year old score pieces perfectly.

Quentin also uses another old Morricone piece, from Exorcist III, in the scene near the beginning when the horses are shown to be sloshing through the grueling snowstorm in slow motion. Beautiful piece of music and a very inventive way to use it.

Almost no one puts music to film like QT, and Morricone matches his style so well. Glad those two found each other.

Sadly that is the way it is a lot of the time with the Oscars. Al Pacino not winning til 1993 for Scent of a woman. Martin Scorsese not winning til 2007 for the Departed. Morgan Freeman not winning til 2005 for Million Dollar Baby. Leonardo DiCaprio not winning til 2016 for the Revenent. And Ennicio Moricone not winning til 2016 for The Hateful Eight. Funny that Leonardo DiCaprio and Ennicio Moricone both got their late career Oscar the same year.

He also reused Reagan's theme from Exorcist II: The Heretic.

Not Ennio Morricone's best OST, the only parts that stood out were his reused previous work (namley The Thing & Exorcist II: The Heretic) but I'm glad it got him an academy award at least.
