Episode 3...
...was pointless to the series and to the story.
ND
I’m absolutely baffled to what I just watched, two random gay guys who have very little to do with the plot have sex and then kill themselves in the next scene. Like what the fuck was that. Am I supposed to care? These characters have been here for 5 minutes
share"Progressive" Hollywood for you. The writers undoubtedly jerked themselves off the entire time they were writing the episode. It'll likely be the one nominated for an Emmy next year.
shareNo, they were there for an hour. A pointless dreary hour that felt more like two.
shareApparently they were leads in the game during a section? Have yet to play game so someone else can confirm.
shareThey were in the game, but the tone of it was very different. The TV show decided to make their relationship end happily, rather than sad (Frank hung himself after being bitten, and Bill became bitter). But Bill was gay in the game.
shareYou'd think for a TV show they'd extend out these characters rather than only have them in 1 episode. It baffles me.
shareExplained the car the main characters needed. And it was a nice story, well acted. Sorry if you haven't experienced love before, must have been a tough watch.
shareThe car could have been explained any number of ways. The explicit gay aspect was gratuitous and could have been handled another way without the deep throating of the two "bears."

What's wrong with two people kissing? They are not you so what does their gender matter?
shareStraight guys are usually turned off by such things. 94% of the male US population is straight and my guess is that most of that 94% are turned off by gay male sex/kissing.
Now...my other bet is that most of that 94% straight male population find nothing wrong with two gorgeous chicks kissing/having sex.
More than a little hypocrisy?
Sure...deal with it. ;-)
It is repeated exposure that gets us used to things. The kiss helped in that way. You are correct.
shareNo it isn’t. If you’re repeatedly exposed to people eating faeces you’re more repulsed the more you’re made to witness it, and eventually you’ll lose patience with the creeps trying to force it on you.
The revulsion straight men experience when forced to watch butch, hairy men kissing and fucking doesn’t dissipate with exposure, it increases.
Gays are a tiny percentage of the population and people are happy to let them do their thing. Shove it in people’s faces and especially their kid’s faces with endless degenerate ‘pride’ parades and forcing it into school curricula and get ready for an aggressive pushback.
Maybe marketing isn't really your thing, Chester.
shareMarketing panders to desires one already has. Sex sells because it appeals to your sex drive.
Butch hairy men kissing and fucking might appeal to you but it doesn't appeal to straight men, it repulses them.
If you think that forcing people to watch what repulses them is good marketing then you have no instinct whatsoever for marketing. You have minus marketing skills.
Of course, kids don’t have sexuality and those pushing this stuff on kids are known as groomers. I hope you’re not one of them.
Exactly!
shareThe revulsion straight men experience when forced to watch butch, hairy men kissing and fucking doesn’t dissipate with exposure, it increases.
Makes no difference what you think, what I said is true for straight men.
shareNo it didn't. I literally hid my eyes from it. They think they're normalizing it but it won't. I'd rather watch zombies eat people ass first than two dudes in a romantic interlude. I don't want to see it and if you trick people into watching it, it has the OPPOSITE effect. In fact, I wish there was a website that told us this ahead of time because I would avoid ANY and ALL movies or TV shows with gay "love scenes". It's disgusting, it's deviant, it's absurd and I don't want to see it, ever.
shareWhy should all entertainment be rooted purely to protect you from your own personal discomfort?
Should there be a "fornication" warning for all content to appease Christians? Or a "contains music" warning to placate Muslims?
I would ask you the same thing. Should mainstream television shows be catering to the smallest demographic, to simultaneously attempt to convince us it's "okay", while trying to make you feel better about being a deviant???
shareExcept most straight people do not have any problem with seeing gay people on camera in relationships.
And I am not gay, as I've told you.
Thats called programming, or brainwashing. Why do we need to keep seeing things we dont wanna see? Maybe the jokes on all of us as we should just stop watching the show.
shareI did exactly that. I'm not going to watch crap like that. It's a POS show anyway.
shareIm currently watching The Man in the High Castle, which is a great series! Yet they are now (in season 3) showcasing several gay kiss and romance scenes...I get it in the shows context. Jews are still being hunted, Gays are persecuted just as much, heck they even execute people who are sick with incurable illnesses in this Nazi Dystopia on earth. But it truly seems like every single show has to have some obligatory gay romance in it. Im also watching Boardwalk Empire for the first time, it shows a gay (more like bisexual though) woman having secret relationships as a B or C subplot.
At least these shows are heavily R rated.
TV shows often have large casts now. It's demographically unlikely for a TV show with a large cast for there not to be 1 or 2 gay characters.
Man in the High Castle also shows John Smith and his wife, Frank & Juliana, Joe & Juliana, Joe & that German girl (can't remember her name), Kido & an American comfort girl... Childen and his Japanese wife, but apparently you note, specifically, Ed McCarthys brief romance (shown)?
I havent seen Childens wife yet? Please no spoilers.
All in the same episode, We see Eds gay kiss, German Lebensborn lesbian affair with Journalist lady in New York, and the exiled Reichsmarschall in Cuba paying a male and female dancer to make love to him and to eachother in his hotel room granted he is murdered by an assassin before it goes to far in showing it
You've already used the "large cast must include gay people argument" with me. If you wanna get real technical: statistically speaking you will not find gay people in every random selection of the population. Go to any town or city and choose 100 people, you will not find gay people in every random group. You just wont. Your chances are certainly higher in San Fransisco, I would bet, but most places you just wont see it.
No need to keep writing me what you already have before. Yes gays exist, yes they have history, but in my opinion they do not need gay character in every single show put on TV. You claim to not see it, and that it doesnt bother you. But it bothers me. It used to not bother me, but it really does seem like every show has to include gay romances.

Thank you, I thought it was funny that Childan was prim and proper and so precise and my fiance thought he would be gay and we were both surprised Ed turned out to be gay. But I figured Childan was just a "man of taste" and that doesnt equal gay. Also when Childan was first invited to the Japanese womans house in the first season, it seemed like he was ready to have an affair with her xD but it was actually an invitation by the couple so they could practice their english and see if he would make a "good american friend" like he would become a token american friend xD
With his love for the culture and art, it makes sense he ends up with a Japanese wife.
San Francisco was the center of gay rights activists at one point, I assumed it had a higher population of gay people. Oddly enough it seems right now DC has a higher chance to find a gay person than California. I guess we are about to experience the fall of rome again.

Childan is literally just a weeaboo, but to Imperial Japan.

The gay stuff was nowhere near gratuitous compared to HBOs usual standards
shareyep totally agree
shareThe games were rather despairing at times as most people or infected wanted to kill or harm you. Bill was just surviving. He was doing fine. And yet by the end he left with Frank despite his objections to Frank's way of life initially. What he found was a reason for living and living well.
Joel survives just fine but he needed a reason to live. That reason is Ellie who is like his replacement daughter. Joel's journey with Ellie will follow a similar trajectory. No matter how miserable life is they find comfort and reason to keep going for someone else.
Without it they might as well skip all the exposition and just have waves and waves of attackers every episode.
We all die. Are all our relationships similarly pointless?
I saw this as someone that was similar to the initial Bill. I was resisting the urge to tell him to kill Frank at the start. Would Bill have lived longer without Frank? Possibly (if we assume he doesn't get shot in the attack). But would he have fully enjoyed life that way?
What makes us fully human is the ability to love and sacrifice. Apparently the infected are still aware of what is going on but have no control. These plot points show the contrast and how we can make selfless choices, even if sometimes they lead to ruin.
It's social engineering and political shenanigans. I have no patience for it and refuse to watch it. Hollywood can take their agenda and shove it up their asses.
shareShowing two men in a relationship is "social engineering"?
shareWhy does Hollywood insist on pushing the agenda of ~5% of the population onto the 95%?
It is "social engineering" in that enterainment vehicles (series, movies, etc.) are portraying gay relationships in a way that "normalizes" them, therefore attempting to make them more acceptable to the majority, non-gay population. About 95% of the US population is straight.

"Why should being straight mean you should find anything untoward about gay relationships?"
Because it's fucking gross. If you have to ask......
I find the idea of old people having sex "gross", but I don't find anything untoward about seeing older couples.
shareShow me where people are being tricked into watching old people do it.
shareNo-one was watching gay people have sex here either.
In any case, this show is rated MA. Deal with it.
No, I'm not going to "deal with it", any more than you are. What if we reacted to every social change you wanted in the name of the alphabet community? You'd have a sore ass, wouldn't you? But it's okay for you to react that way to me? That makes you a hypocrite. Which is typical.

Then what are you whining about? I can do this all day.
I'm aggravated they ALL have gays in them. Without warning. It's not done because it adds anything to the story. It's done to normalize deviant behavior. I want to be entertained, not preached to.

Ellie is a 14yr old girl. Her sexuality should never be part of ANY story.
shareShe's literally lesbian in the original.
shareOnly a liberal thinks that's okay.

I suggest you drop the series then.
shareI think I said that, genius.
shareAlso I should note that I don't know how old Ellie actually is in the video game where she starts going into relationships since she only starts off as 13 (14 in the show) and there's a 5 year jump into TLOU: Part II, albeit the actress in the show is actually 19.
shareYep. The director admitted to it.
shareEvidence?
And you know Bill was gay in the original, right?
Thats something I wondered. Did they not want to follow the game story in this episode "Bills Town" because it showed that their gay relationship fell apart? In the game Bill and Frank had a major falling out. You dont even find out Bill is gay until you read the letter that frank left behind. But in the HBO series Bill and Frank never had a falling out and basically lived excellent to eachother for twenty years. Was this why they changed the story, because they didnt want to show that relationship didnt work out, but instead glorify it and show it worked so well that they would kill themselves together rather than live without eachother?
I can see the poetic, romantic, artful side of this story about two people finding true happiness in this apocalyptic world. It was more hopeful than the "Bills Town" in the videogame. Yet I can also see hollywood pushing that gay stuff and ramping it up for an audience that is not mostly gay.
Representation matters (no taxation without representation!) but why does every show have to have gay and transgender characters? I use to not mind it so much. But it does feel like everyone is trying to outgay eachother on every show.
Yes, it was shown differently - but the point is that Bill being gay wasn't invented for the TV show.

Perhaps you need to remind your point to some else, as Im a different poster than the one you replied to originally.
I noticed you glossed over my first paragraph, I stated Bill was gay in the game and the how it was done differently. Any thoughts as to why you think they changed it from the game?
for recent shows, Mr. Terrific in the show Arrow was done well. I had no problem with him being gay or his husband. It felt organic and his problems in life didnt stem from him being gay. The man had ordinary problems stemming from extraordinary situations. Its really the only recent gay relationship I can think of quickly that I didnt get annoyed by it.
They genuinely beat you over the head with gay people these days. Thats why people are annoyed by it. If this exact show came out 15 years ago and episode 3 was unchanged, I have a feeling people would be less annoyed than they are now.
The relationship shown had some positives to it, but with how the current times of media are, everything looks like an agenda being pushed instead of organic storytelling. Its why people are already primed to wanna tune out or become easily annoyed.

The only thing I can take from their direction that is positive, is that it showed a more hopeful side of life in this world. That happiness can be found and even maintained. The videogame was much more brutal and apathetic in "Bills Town".
But all the rest?...Im tired of it too.
They should have kept it true to the game, devoting an entire episode to two people we never see again is so absolutely stupid in a show that will only have 9 episodes and only one more season. I wanted to see Ellie’s back and forth reactions to Bill, and him help Joel get the battery and prep the car, like in the game.
In future rewatches, the entire pointless middle segment of this episode is getting skipped.
