Difference of the tone between the original series and the current ones?

Honestly, I don't remember the original series. I did watch them when they were aired back in the nineties. I would like to ask the people that have seen them recently if they felt like a parody, because the new series definitely do. At least for me.

reply

There has always been an element of parody or tongue in cheek... that's why they always juxtaposed the scenes with the soap opera with the regular narrative to remind you of that fact. The first season was a lot more conventional and then Lynch went way out in left field for the second season. So the tone of this season probably resembles the second season more although so far it seems more coherent.

reply

Thanks. I guess, I should rewatch. Most likely, I've paid more attention to season one. That's why I remember the show as a little bit more realistic.

reply

Actually, Lynch left for most of the second season due to being forced by the network to reveal who killed Laura Palmer too early. That's when some stupid storylines that weren't as good came in.

This time he has been allowed free reign to take the story wherever he wants it to go.

You have to give him credit for this because it must be quite hard when you had a vision and your boss comes along and tells you they want the final chapter NOW. How then do you make up a decent story when the ending has been given away?

the overthetop goofiness is gone which is great. still i had to tolerate lucy not understanding cellphones and that was about as much as i could take. i like the new approach.

Im enjoying the return and love david lynch for bringing it back. The one huge thing that's missing from the new episodes is that you just don't get that wholesome warm cherry pie and black coffee feeling. Twin peaks has become a bit too worldly for my tastes.

Can't go home again. I think that a lot of people were hoping that TP would miraculously transport us back to 1990. Our world is so different now, even in Twin Peaks. Sad but true.

The Twin Peaks of the '90s was very much a product of its time, and it was so influential and has had so many imitators since then that this new series had to do its own thing. I don't think it would have worked otherwise.

I watched the "original" two series about 6 months ago, so the memory is still fresh. They were so interesting because they mixed a typical 90's crime and police series with mystery and Lynch's weird stuff. And this weird mixture, somehow, really worked great.
This new series...it's just Lynch, pure and simple :-D I still like it because I love his movies but I can perfectly understand those who don't. It's very artsy, cryptic, dark and slooooooow (especially episodes like S03E06). Very much unlike the original episodes, which were built like a regular TV show of that time but had Lynch stuff in it.

I don't understand how people say it is slow. There is so much jammed into each episode that the slow comment makes me think I am watching a different show.

reply

Some episodes advance the plot more, that's true (SE7 was superb IMO). But that's not really what I meant. Many sceenes are shot in a way that they appear very slow - long static takes filled with someone watching a glass box or someone sweeping the floor. This is obviously great for building up tension and Lynch mastered this technique in his movies. However, it is quite unusual and uncomfortable for many people.

This is what people tend to forget though - Lynch is first and foremost a film maker, and not the made-for-tv type either.

Film Directors have made some amazing tv series, having been given the chance and the budget. Look at Breaking Bad, Sense 8, True Detective, Top Of The Lake and The Knick as examples.

reply

Breaking Bad had very lengthy scenes and I never heard any complaints about the slowness of the show like I do about Twin Peaks.

reply

True for Breaking Bad. Love that show!

Me too.

Yes! Just watched ep 7 and was finally fully brought back into the twin peaks vibe. I was actually getting a little frustrated with the return, until ep 7. They brought it home perfectly. Still not sure why uncle jerry looks like he's 80 but.... ep 7 reminded me why i fell in love with twin peaks in the first place. Also, i wouldn't bother responding to anyone that doesn't understand what slow means when speaking of lynch's work. Anyone with a brain knows what you're talking about.

reply

I think the slowness could be in terms of the characters that don't seem to have a place when they are first shown. Like in Part 4 when Wally comes to pay his respects to Sheriff Truman, it seems like just filler. It might be more later or it might just have been exposition about Harry Truman. If you aren't used to Lynch, I can see why someone might think it's slow.

I think Season 3 has been a nice middle ground between the goofiness of Season 1 & 2 and the waaay overly dark Fire Walk with Me.
