What's with all the language?

They make an Hommage to the 50s, act like 50s actors only to ruin the atmosphere with bad language and lots of swearing. Guess they want to appear edgy and clever. Idiots.

reply

They apparently weren't around in the 1950s, or they are trying to make the show appeal to those who were not. The F and S words were not tossed around as easily then as they are now, especially by or in the presence of women.

reply

That doesn't sound realistic. People were extremely prudish in the 1950s. Even pseudo cuss-words were frowned upon back then. Doesn't make sense they would be talking with 2010s gutter language. The only people who would have talked like that were either lowlife trash living on the streets, or soldiers working far from home.

You think profanity arose only after the 50s? It goes back a lot further than that.

reply

Don't forget to tack idiot on to the end of your comment or the original poster won't take it seriously. ;-)

reply

i guess thats what those imdb signatures were for !

reply

It does, but it was more restrained in public and around children, and much less often used by women. Someone would have to have been completely unhinged to drop a loud F-bomb in public. You just didn't hear it ... even in the 60s. Heck, It's used more often in an episode of that show than I think I've ever heard it in public in my adult life, right up to today.

reply

I agree, it's not really that common in my real life to hear swearing other than from teenagers trying to look cool, and tv.

reply

It depends a lot on your environments. New Yorkers run in a fast crowd.

reply

I don't know how much profanity was really used back then, but I find it off-putting in the show.

reply

We enjoy the show, but the use of profanity is out of place in their scenes in that time period. Some writers think if they don't drop F-bombs, they're not writing "adult" material. The show would be every bit as successful without it.

reply

What do you mean for the time period? People during the 50s and 60s cussed all the time. Just not in movies or shows.

reply

Well the show is aimed at adults. Maybe it just isn’t for you.

reply

Deadwood is back.

reply

Half of Susie's dialog was M*F*.

reply

Yeah. And it was hilarious.

reply

Susie Swearengen

I just realized that that character Al Swearengen ... swear engine ? LOL!

reply

Hate to tell you this but actors in the 50s spewed profanity too. Did you really think they all only used G-rated language because it’s all they were allowed to do onscreen?

reply

Seriously, do they think comedians were polite and mealy-mouthed in their private lives?

In the 1950s some people objected strongly to bad language, which didn't stop others from using it.
