This film was based on another film, a European one in a different language, I think. That film probably explained some of these things better. Another was the odd exchange about the pronunciation of her name, which is really unexplained.
Nah I disagree. I think it's just about the journey of her character. The movie simplified in it's most basic is about her opening up. So the creators used the news as a way to not only show how disconnected and closed off from the world she is, but also when she suggests it to her family that it's something they should now start doing it shows the audience that she's at a stage in her life where she's exploring. Thats what the ending is about aswell.
I think they use the name to show the different stages of her life. Like she use to be Mata but life wore her down so much she became Agnes. That's why he's the only one that calls here that, he's her escape. Sorry if I rambled I just finished the movie.
