Definitely a commercial disappointment. A woke disappointment, to boot. One of those movies the critics hail as the most "important" thing since the wheel, while the world collectively goes, "Meh".

It'll probably clean up at the Oscars, though. I miss the days when that show honoured films the public actually gave a shit about (i.e. back when people bothered to watch the ceremony).

Yes. I see 83 million worldwide against a 50 million budget. I always hear the gross intake should double the budget for it to not lose money. And then anything over double is profit. So it needs to make a hundred million just to come out even. Flop.

Its a shame because even if you don't agree with the politics within the movie, its important citizens, especially younger audiences, learn about our past history

And a significant portion of it was perpetrated by the Dahomey, the very people this film portrays as anti-slavery freedom fighters.

How so? I didn't see this movie but we all learned as early as in elementary school about the African Slave trade across the Atlantic when white American southerners invaded Africa and stole natives and sold them into slavery here in America

I don't know much about it, but most movies take lots of liberties when it comes to accuracy. Some more than others, and I've heard some say that this movie is one that is not very historically accurate.

Black / Negro films are only popular here in the US. The gangster rapper films of 90s that once were hot overseas are a thing of the past.
