The supply crate (spoiler)

So perhaps I missed a line of dialog when watching, but what was the deal with them continuously trying to push that heavy crate up the hill? Especially when it was just filled with smaller more manageable boxes.

Even if they were really attached to the crate(to each his own), why not just take a box or two out to lighten it, push it up the hill, and refill it again?

reply

Yeah, that was ridiculous. No way there were getting over the top of that hill. No one even suggested it.

reply

Yeah .... also considering the crates came down with a big parachute, that could be used to pull those light packages of food across the snow. One guy who used to be on the radio around here said the best way to distribute food like this to be sure that many people got some is to drop MREs free in bright-colored packages across a large area of land so it is not all in one place.

reply

Lol I thought the same thing. Obviously they couldn't get it over the hill, so just carry the crap separately, you had enough people to do that. However, the guy with the rifle was crazy, like most people portrayed in this show, so it wasn't going to happen.

reply

Come to think of it, you make a very good point!

reply

Presumably they wanted all of the supplies in the crate. From memory, they were also moving quickly to avoid a change in weather conditions, so they didn’t have time to make multiple trips up the hill.

Just a plot device to create conflict. Interestingly, I have done something similar to what they were attempting but with an ahkio, a type of sled for moving heavy loads across frozen terrain. The ahkio carries all the food, water, fuel, tent, shovels, picks, and other miscellaneous supplies to supply about 10 men for a week. It takes 3-4 athletic men to move one across easy terrain. What they were trying to do in the tv show is impossible. Yeah the big crate was dead weight, they could have each pulled a small crate no problem.

reply

I was thinking the exact same thing! Why were they trying to get the huge crate over the ridge, when there were smaller crates inside? Just take the smaller crates out and move those over the ridge. That made absolutely no sense to me.

That whole sequence was offensively bad. As if writer thought that viewers are as stupid and writers of this show.

Who on earth thought it was good storyline? There is no way in the world that those people would push that stupid and heavy box when it was obviously they can take away all small boxes and carry it in parachute.
