What's your go-to remedy for a cold or flu?

***Added: I posted this over a month ago, got too sick to respond at the time, but there are some very good suggestions made in this thread so thought I'd bump it back up.

Hard to tell how helpful some of the stuff I tried was -- and honestly, I tried virtually everything mentioned in this thread -- that was immune-building but I can say what was most effective as far as quick-acting and helping reduce or eliminate symptoms were: Alka Seltzer and NyQuil.

I did eat a LOT of garlic. Since I can't handle noshing on a raw clove, I sliced thinly or mashed cloves (waiting 10 minutes before eating because that's when the helpful ingredients get activated), and made garlic bread or put in a grilled cheese sandwich. Any way I could figure to get them in my food that I thought would also taste good.***

My body's trying to ward something off. Woke up with a sore throat. It went away fairly quickly but I just feel kind of off and slightly weird.

Took some Emergen-C Immune Plus earlier. That's knocked a cold or flu out for me before if I catch it early enough, and am hoping it'll do the same this time.

I was already sick about a month ago (horrible stomach flu type thing, felt like food poisoning but with chills and body ache) and don't want to be sick again. I hardly ever get sick. Twice within a few months is unacceptable ๐Ÿ˜

Stay warm, drink plenty of fluids (got some fresh OJ, chicken broth, chicken soup), eat stuff with lots of fresh garlic, rest. Those are the other things I do. Sure wish I had some homemade, heavily garlicked chicken soup, but don't and am not up to making it. Not sure it helps much anyway ๐Ÿ˜„

I'm open to any sekrit remedies anyone else has. Plus it's cold/flu season, and other people might benefit from ideas.

P.S. No, I have not traveled to China recently, or been around anyone who has.

OTC stuff--decongestant, antihistamine, ibuprofen or naproxen sodium, cough medicine

Is anybody prohistamine?

Sleep is my biggest cure when I feel a cold or flu coming on. I also make a chicken broth with cayenne powder that seems to help me.

I'm a firm believer in the medicinal power of chicken noodle soup with plenty of garlic, onions and ginger root during the winter, Cat. I've got some on standby for tomorrow.

I can barely remember the last time I had a cold, much less the flu.

The only thing I can think of for you which you haven't already mentioned is good old fashioned Alka-Seltzer which is almost a panacea for a number of ailments including nausea, headaches, body aches. I've discovered it's ideal for a hangover. It hydrates, is very economical and works quickly. Also, gargling with warm saltwater is very effective for a sore throat. Best of luck.

anything that knocks me out on the first night works like dayquil/contac c. if i sleep on that first night i feel a flu coming on most times the flu is shortened or aborted.

Feel better Catbookss!

I eat tons of garlic and โ€œsuperfoodsโ€ on a regular basis and do all the other health stuff and Iโ€™ve been sick once in the last six years. Whenever something starts to creep up, I swear by upping the garlic, including doing sanctified crushed garlic clove in honey bombs, cutting out coffee and substituting in kombucha, fresh raw ginger tea, and magick. Knocks it out every time.

I too , use the "booze" solution, usually beer , followed by sleep.
Pretty effective , usually ok for work the next day.

Try and make your own chicken broth and keep in in your freezer for such occasions. Make the broth out of bones and give it a nice low simmer for hours and hours and get that marrow out. Try and low simmer for 10 hours or so. Strain it, put it in the fridge and the next morning it will look like jello, that's when you know you've got all the excellence out of them bones. That broth will also help stabilize an upset stomach........... and don't worry when it becomes jello, any heat melts that goodness and it's absolutely so much better than store bought.

Eat a raw clove of garlic with a glass of water or orange juice. If the clove is big just go half. If you don't want to eat raw garlic, dice some up and fold it into a small napkin corner and suck on it, like chewing tobacco. Not a big wad, just enough. This also might help if you ever have an abscess. I had a bad tooth for years. Every few months I'd get an abscessed tooth, same tooth, started doing this onto the gum and tooth and BAM went away. Can also use a combo of garlic and onion.

If you can make a trip to the store, try SuperLysine +, stuff works great for me......... plus it works awesome against cold and canker sores. I get a bottle made by Quantum Health, found at the Vitamin Shop. It's a supplement with Vitamin C, echinacea, licorice, propolus and oderless garlic.

Also you can get some echinacea plus tea to help out. The brand I use is Traditional Medicinals and I find it at Jewel and Woodman's.

If you are starting to get sick more often it might be that your diet isn't as good as it should be, that you are not as active as you should be.

Always remember to wash your hands after going places and doing things. Try and remember to not touch your face so much with your hands.
Make sure you keep your gums nice and clean.
