How is everyone preparing for the incoming Covid19 pandemic?

Most around me are being insanely ignorant of this virus, but that's just fine by me while I stock up on everything I'll need if an outbreak happens in my immediate area.

Staying at home with a mask.

reply

If I make a mask out of cheesy nachos and slowly eat it over several days in front of the TV will this provide protection..?
I'm asking for a friend

reply

So did anyone actually prepare?

reply

we have masks in the house from SARS in 2003. we haven't used them yet.

reply

I was at Tractor Supply and saw N95โ€™s in the tool section.

reply

I'm prepared. Plenty of food and anything else we'd need for the pooch and me. (Note: this does not include a year's supply of TP, paper towels, hand sanitiser, or anything else that makes no sense.)

reply

I can't find it now, but a couple of days ago I saw a video about ten things you should stock in your pantry in case of a quarantine. The one item that struck me as the most ridiculous was pickles! Really?? Sorry, pickles are not in my got-to-have-it list. I wish I could find that video because there were a couple of other things that seemed silly, but I haven't found it yet.

reply

Pickles?? ๐Ÿ˜› ... Because they're fermented? That's all I can think of. Same for me, pickles are definitely not on my must-have self-quarantine pantry list ๐Ÿ˜„

I got cans of soup, heavy on the French onion. Canned salmon and other fish for the Omega-3s and because I like it. Dried split peas and beans. Already had pasta and sauce. Crackers and cookies. Canned pineapple juice and tomato juice. No doubt other random things I already had. No pickles!

Post it here if you find that video again. Sounds like fun :)

reply

Pasta was one, and beans and lentils, which make sense. I'm someone who can't eat beans/lentils (my digestive system does not like them) so whatever. Peanut butter, for protein, was on there, with the host saying it's so good you can eat it with a spoon. I love peanut butter, but never in my life have I eaten a spoonful of peanut butter! Yep, I'm weird, I guess.
Oh, canned tomatoes was on the list, too.

reply

Those things do make sense. Too bad you can't eat beans or lentils. They're so easy to store. Oh yes, I got two jars of peanut butter, and plenty of celery to go with it and for making soup. I can eat it with a spoon, but don't do that very often ๐Ÿ˜€

I'm not big on canned tomatoes so didn't get any. I think I've got a can on hand.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have some Gatorade on hand, or water with electrolytes. Anything in case you do get sick that keeps you well hydrated and you like to drink. I hate drinking plain water so bought 5 or so containers of water flavoured with watermelon/mint, and cucumber/lime. They're not sweetened, no calories, just nicer than plain water.

reply

Yes, the beans and lentils make a lot of sense. I drink water, but it has to be ice cold. I keep a bottle of it in the fridge.

I'm funny that way. Cold drinks have to be really cold. I go through a lot of ice, which isn't so bad - it's water, after all. Never had Gatorade and was never really interested in it - I don't know why.

reply

Rice is another thing that stores forever and takes up little space. I don't much like rice myself, but lots of others do. You're lucky you like drinking water, even if it has to be very cold.

I've had Gatorade a few times. It's okay. It's supposed to be good at rehydrating.

reply

Black beans and rice with a little bacon, cornbread with a little honey and red pepper, and fresh stewed greens. Wash it down with a couple canned beers.
All survival food, either with long shelf lives or available anywhere almost year round.

Sounds good, right? ๐Ÿ˜€
Especially if you're hungry.

reply

I'd try it, but none of those things are my favourite foods. I'll take the beer! ๐Ÿป

The fresh greens would be the tricky part, unless you've got your own garden. Peppers store pretty well (I think).

Now I want breakfast.

reply

You'd be surprised what qualifies as greens.
Hunger makes for incredible seasoning.

reply

Maybe where you live but we get little rain here so there isn't much. I expect I could rustle up a meager serving of dandelion greens but that's about it.

I'm with you there. Some of the most delicious meals I've had was when I was camping, seasoned well with hunger :)

reply

pickles would survive a nuclear explosion.

reply

Awaiting the zombie apocalypse. Fun!

reply

I think the ZA would be easier to deal with than a virus!

Ahem, R_Kane. Iโ€™ve seen you belittle people who post links without a statement of some sort.

reply

Okay, then, and you are right. I was being lax from a message from a friend. Thank you for calling me out. Mea culpa.

That having been said, i stand by my previous post, and by abhorrence of panic.

reply

All I get is a message that says "The link you followed may be broken, or the page may have been removed." ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Thanks for letting me know, Catbooks. A friend sent me that page from Facebook. It was about how people are stockpiling toilet paper, but not food.

No food? Not much need for toilet paper!

reply

Weird, isn't it? People can't think straight when they're panicking. A friend sent me a funny graphic on all this, which I can't post but will type it out.

CDC: Prepare for a viral outbreak.
People: I should stock up.
CDC: Not a bad idea, some extra hand sanitiser and disinfectant would be smart.
People: I buy toilet paper and water
CDC: What? No, that's ... it's a virus.
People: Snow storm?
CDC: No, you'll be able to go out, you just need to be mindful about cleanliness.
People: I stay home till snow gone.
CDC: There's no snow.
People: ...
CDC: ...
People: I have 300 cases of water
CDC: *facepalm*
