Do you think it’s necessary to buy an entire kitchen knife set?

Found this on Amazon:

I’m not sure I’ll use all of these, just getting into cooking but if I need them it does look nice. Only $52.

I would buy a couple of expensive knives over a large, inexpensive set. Macy's is my go-to place to buy knives, you can usually find something on sale.

If you want a set, here's something for around the same price that doesn't feature the steak knives but is certainly better knives https://www.macys.com/shop/product/new-england-cutlery-7-piece-titanium-coated-cutlery-set?ID=8393268&CategoryID=31760&sizes=KNIFE_TYPE!!Knife%20Sets

OR something $10 or so more expensive but a great price for an excellent brand https://www.macys.com/shop/product/j.a.-henckels-international-solution-10-pc.-knife-set-created-for-macys?ID=6857734&CategoryID=31760&sizes=KNIFE_TYPE!!Knife%20Sets#fn=BRAND%3DJ.A.%20Henckels

But I think one should assess what kind of knives they really, actually use and buy accordingly. I don't even own a chef's knife--I get by on a serrated prep knife and a paring knife. I also bought an expensive steak knife but it turns out the paring knife works just as well.

No way dude. Online is the ONLY way (unless you live close to a high end knife shop) to find high quality knives. Knives can and should be a lifetime purchase so due diligence is in order. The best dept. store knives are mediocre, at best.

Beware, however. It's VERY easy to spend hundreds of dollars on just ONE knife.

I love my chef's knife, but like you I don't have a whole set. I paid a little bit more to get good quality knives I actually use. I have a chef's knife, paring knife, bread knife, and a carving knife, which I don't use it but my partner does.

NOT NECESSARY...AS OFTEN AS I FIND MYSELF HAVING TO "DISPOSE" OF A KNIFE,ITS LIKE THROWING MONEY IN THE RIVER.....DONT LOOK IN THE RIVER.

Buy individual knives that you will need rather than a set. I would never buy on-line because it is so important for the knife to feel well in your hand. Also, I love ceramic knives for smaller chores.

All my ceramic knives end up with little chips out of them.

reply

No, I bought all my kitchen knives at thrift stores.

Some are very good, most are still in use, and if any break or grow dull, I don't feel a pang for breaking up the set when I throw them out.

reply

No. I have eating utensils like a fork, knife, and a spoon. I have a couple of sharp knives, but that's about it.

You'd be surprised how handy any of those can be. I've ended up using all of the kitchen knives in our block for one thing or another for the past 20 years. In fact, we have so many knives in my kitchen, we can't store them all in the block, and had put the rest in a special silverware drawer below said knife block.

Only buy individual knives. Knive sets are a scam.
