Do you think it’s necessary to buy an entire kitchen knife set?

Found this on Amazon:

I’m not sure I’ll use all of these, just getting into cooking but if I need them it does look nice. Only $52.

Skip the knife sets and buy only what you need and will actually use.

I agree with him on paring knives. They're too small to do most jobs and a utility knife can do a paring knife's job, and more. Also on the chef and serrated bread knife, plus kitchen shears. That's really all you need, 3 good knives and a pair of shears.

I bought a set in a block and now wish I hadn't. I'd rather use the magnetic strips he talks about for storage because they take up less space and are handier.

Bummer about not using a steel. It came with the set and I thought it was a good thing to have 🙁

Definitely the entire set. Never know when you'll run into a particularly resilient victim.

No it's not, but it's one way to get started in outfitting a kitchen.
There are a lot of conflicting opinions here. I don't cook and don't need expensive knives, but I have a modest block in my kitchen that makes me feel I have whatever I might need if the urge struck me.
And the block itself is handy and has, although common, an aesthetic about it.
Of all the things I might have wasted money on, I don't think my little block is one of them.
And you can always change your mind and go a different route, thrift store or individual knives from actual knife stores.
Mine are fine.

Not necessary but nice to have. Plus, I personally like how they look.
