scariest non-horror movies?

or movies that teeter the edge of being horror? movies that could technically be argued as horror films?

eyes wide shut
inland empire
gravity
nightcrawler
killing of the sacred deer
no country for old men

Come And See (1985) is absolutely my number one. It is a terrifying film about the horrors of war, and it has one of the most disturbing endings ever conceived.

For the topic, Eyes Wide Shut is a good choice. Gravity too.

reply

Great choice. It’s definitely my favorite WWII film.

The Peanut Butter Solution (1985)

It has traumatized many adults who saw it as a kid https://moviechat.org/tt0089789/The-Peanut-Butter-Solution/58c744c76b51e905f670afc5/Why-does-it-have-this-effect-on-us

I AM STILL LOOKING FOR A COPY FOR MY COLLECTION...THAT THING FEELS LIKE A FEVER DREAM AT THIS POINT.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986). Creepy and disturbing.

reply

I disagree. Henry is definitely a horror film, but it's far from a conventional one. Instead of the supernatural or some masked maniac on the loose, it presents a character study of a deeply disturbed killer and examines his twisted motives. It's an unnerving, truly horrific gaze into the depths of the human psyche, and one of the scariest films I've ever seen.

Michael Rooker also rules.

reply

I agree that it has horrific elements and you've bolstered my stance that IMDb isn't sacrosanct when it comes to their designations (lines are often blurred and crossed) of a film, just as their ratings.

So disturbing it had to be filmed in black and white.

Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland (cartoon) were pretty scary when I was a kid

reply

I agree 100% with Come and See.

The House That Jack Built (2018) I don't think this is a horror, and I didn't find it scary, but it did give me the creeps.

Also... Return to Oz (1985)

reply

Omg, absolutely Return to Oz!

I screamed the cinema down at 5 years old watching this. Gave me nightmares for years afterwards.

reply

return to oz is really shocking

reply

Fauci.

Threads (1984)

reply

This should be number one on the list! I've seen it 3 times now and it is still shocking. Imagine how 80s viewers felt watching it during the final throws of the cold War.

Truely Terrifying.

reply

good call. agreed.

reply

I was going to put this, but in my mind it is a horror movie. Yeah, this and Come and See are both horrifying.
