Why Do People Troll?

There's nothing wrong with being provocative, playing devil's advocate, but just to troll for trolling sake?

People say, "If you keep feeding the troll, they win" - but WHAT do they actually win? Besides the obvious. Yes, they want attention, but then what? They ruin any chance of a "normal" conversation in the future when people ignore you.

reply

Why?: -
Attention seeking
Sense of importance
Boredom
Personal amusement
Revenge
Anger
Psychopathic tendencies
Sadism
Because they can

The answer to being ignored is to create a sock.

reply

Personal amusement mostly.

reply

Depends on the troll - some can be genuinely funny, but most were probably bullied at school and this is the only way that they can experience a sense of power.

reply

That's another thing I don't understand. A "regular" on here might quickly ignore someone bullshitting with a new username under (100). Especially if they create hundreds within a few days for "credibility". Do people simply do it because of the anonymity? Most people never troll in real life.

Unfortunately, even when a "real" person creates a new account on here, they're going to be treated with suspicion.

reply

"Most people never troll in real life."

That's exactly why they do it online - virtually (pun intended) no fear of repercussions.

reply

Hey Andy ! What do you call ... drum solo encores?

reply

one thing I would point out is that responding to trolling is also a form of trolling. it does not create healThy DIALOGUE AND THE PERSON RESPONDING, IS ONLY FILLING THEIR OWN NEEDS FOR EASY SOCIALIZATION.

REAL LIFE TROLLING IS COUNTER PROTESTING,

reply

UH OH...THOSE ARE THE REASONS WHY I'M HERE.๐Ÿ˜

reply

Ask db20db. He just went after me for no reason. I'm used to it by now though.

reply

"I'm used to it by now though."

If this claim was true, you never would have posted this. Just more playing the victim, trying to rally others behind you once again.

reply

Wrong. I like engaging with your trolling to see how far your insanity goes.

reply

I think db20db is just a really angry, unhappy person who takes out his anger on others. I don't think he is trying to troll. He just seems mad all the time.

reply

And I think you're a lame, childish, pretentious follower, who's merely jumping onto a convenient bandwagon.

reply

I may be lame and childish, but I am not pretentious! I don't even know the meaning of the word pretentious. I don't know the meaning of any big words! (sticks out tongue) Stop being such a big meanie pants or I'll tell on you!

reply

You just confirmed my observation. Case closed, idiot!

reply

What is an idiot?

reply

Keep in mind that db20db is retired and he acts the way he does.

reply

Now you're desperately latching onto my being retired as if that even has anything to do with it. Maybe you're jealous because I retired early and am now leisurely enjoying the fruits of my labors. And unlike you, the bulk of my free time is devoted to actually watching movies.

reply

I bring up you being retired because I find it baffling that an alleged adult enjoys poking people on a message board on posts that have nothing to do with you and when they actually have to do with you, you can't show self restraint and choose not to comment.

reply

SO?....DO YOU HAVE A BIG GRAY BUSH?๐Ÿค”

reply

Is it the anonymity? People don't do this "in real life"

reply

Depends on the troll - some can be genuinely funny, but most were probably bullied at school and this is the only way that they can experience a sense of power.

reply

If they're funny, I'd never ignore them :)

reply

I'll add the internet and what makes the news... The trolling in real life is all that's uploaded when it comes to adult human interactions. You won't see many YouTube videos of two neighbors talking in the driveway, or standing in line politely at the Secretary of State (DMV), getting along in public, banal activities, etc etc.. It's what dominates the news, so people talk about it, and there's a distorted version of reality.

reply

There are a variety of reasons. Research has suggested that online trolls tend to have higher levels of sadism--that is, they enjoy hurting others--and the anonymity of the internet makes it very easy for them to do so. It gives them the joys of bullying but from a safer space. Some might also troll as an outlet; if they're being bullied at school or they're in a home environment where they feel victimized, they may do it to gain a sense of power. Others may troll out of cynicism; they hate the world and want to spread their misery. As for what they win, in my experience there's usually at least one person who engages them. But even if they get ignored, I'm sure a lot of them create multiple accounts and try again.

reply

So trolls are officially sadistic bullies rather than say jokey messers about looking for cheap amusement?

reply

Not all of them are, no. Like I said, there are a variety of reasons, cheap amusement being one of them. There has just been some research suggesting that, in general, people with higher levels of sadism are more prone to trolling. That doesn't mean that every troll is a sadist.

reply

They're bored and they're cunts.

reply

I ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT THAT FINAL C IN YOUR NAME STOOD FOR.๐Ÿ˜˜

reply

Thatโ€™s not what your mom said.

reply

GOOD TO KNOW MY MOM SAID YOU AREN'T A "C".

reply

Middle name is Twelve Inch.

reply

I do think that Intothenight / Pressplay / Ticketsplease is simply a loon. He does seem to actually believe the ridiculous nonsense he tells, like talking to birds using his mental prowess or any topics involving minors in some inappropriate ways. He has a constant and specific theme, not just messing around bullshiting randomly.

reply

I think mental illness definitely has to be considered.

reply

Yes, when he was moviebuff there were definitely indications that perhaps some psychological help could be beneficial.

reply

Yeah when I joined here I got the impression some people were thinking I was him or someone similar, I got a few weird comments thrown my way.

He might be rather young and curious to discuss weird things or just enjoy stirring up conversation. A different type of troll to someone who simply flames and abuses people anyway.

reply

anonymity.
