Salem's Lot (1979). Permanently scarred a whole entire generation of children. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I carry those scars with pride! I can say... I was there when Salem's Lot was first shown! Those who know, know!!

"Look at me, teacher! Look at me!" 😱

Great. Now I'm going to have trouble sleeping again. 😞

reply

Salem's Lot is ranked as one of the best made-for-TV movies, although it was actually a miniseries.

reply

Yeah, no, it's not a miniseries. No matter how it's classified today. Two and three part made for television movies were always classified as just that. Made for television movies. Also called two or three part special television presentations as well as two or three part special television events. Never a miniseries. It's still not a miniseries. Calling these things miniseries is a more modern classification. Back then anything over a three-part television movie was considered a miniseries. Such as Roots, or Centennial, or North and South, or The Thorn Birds etc. Also horror movies were not classified as horror movies back then. They were classified as Thrillers.

I was looking at the runtime and it totaled 3h 20m, which would make it an "epic." There were a number of those in the Golden Age of Hollywood, and it's too bad we see very few these days.

I read about the three parts being edited together for a planned theatrical release in Europe; I don't know if this ever happened or not.

reply

It was 2 two hour installments. Not 3. The total movie time is 83mins. The rest consists of commercials, previews, recap, double opening credits and double closing credits etc. They never stitched anything together to make a theatrical movie in Europe. What they did was cut the full movie down and made a 1980 theatrical release in Europe and elsewhere which was a little under 2 hours long. They also made a shortened version that they showed one time on television during a Halloween season which was never released theatrically or on home video which was about 150 minutes worth of movie time that ran over a 3 hour period in one night.

Bambi (1942)

reply

it is kind of dark

reply

The movie as a whole is great. β™₯
But the scene in which Bambi loses his mother is shocking and confusing even for fairytale-hardened children.

While to describe it as 'traumatizing' goes too far.
Luckily Bambi's father picks him up. πŸ¦Œβ€‹

From the top of my head I'll say "The Witches".

I saw this when I was 9, it scared the hell out of me and and the kids I saw it with.

Poltergeist is a great scary movie!

reply

Scary as hell for a 9 year old! I don’t know how old I was but you and I are close to the same age. When I saw it as a kid, my friend and I were scared after we came home from the movie and we were in my room when the clown doll peeked around the side of the door and then it jumped into the room, right on top of us.

My sister had the same doll and my mom had made it peek into the room and then she threw it in on us. It looked so real that we screamed our heads of! I can’t remember the last time I saw it as an adult, but that movie and the experience afterwards scared the piss out of me and my friend.

I had a stuffed toy Clown in my room and a huge tree outside my window…thank God we didn’t have a swimming pool!

I agree with Poltergeist being a terrific scary movie for kids. It’s a classic imo.

reply

That was what made Poltergeist groundbreaking. It wasn't set in a mysterious mansion or creepy castle... it took place in contemporary suburbia, the last place someone would expect anything paranormal to happen. That would make any child uneasy.

They only removed the tombstones!!!!

β€˜All are welcome. All welcome. Go into the light.’

This flick had some great lines!

reply

Yes, it did. How about the 2nd one with the scary preacher. I don’t think I ever saw again after watching it when it first came out.

I didn’t see the second or the third one. Based on the linked article I didn’t miss much:)

reply

I dont remember the story at all, but only the creepy preacher guy. But yeah, there’s probably a reason why it’s not talked about often.

reply

It skews towards older kids, but they'll find a real treat in The Monster Squad (1987).

THAT IS THE CORRECT ANSWER. NOEMOJI
