ACTUAL interest in WNBA, or news shoving it down us?

Is there any ACTUAL interest in WNBA, or news shoving it down us?

I keep seeing WNBA this and that in my feed.... is it cool now for some reason?
Caitlin someone this, Angel someone that.... how's that all working out?

reply

I think Caitlin Clark is going to have a huge affect on the WNBA. Last year, the New York Liberty became a super team when they signed the biggest player in the league, Breanna Stewart. Plus you've got that super team out in Las Vegas. It seems the cards are falling right for the WNBA to thrive.

reply

I could make it a billion dollar industry with two changes:
1. more makeup
2. skimpier outfits
call me sexist, just being real. They can stay with the top athletes doing their amazing best, just dress them up for TV. look at the (stupid) audeince PAYING for only fans. same thing.
This is life on Earth.

reply

Eehh, that sounds a bit WWE to me. If I remember correctly, Vince McMahon tried to drum up interest in the XFL back in the 2000s the exact same way (via the cheerleaders).

Anyway, you could be right, for the WNBA to get to that level (billion dollar industry)- it may have to do just that.

However, I do think it can thrive based on what is happening.

Personally, I hope it doesn't resort to cheap tactics.

IT'S SPORTS...NOT STRIPPING...YOUR SUGGESTION IS NOT ONLY SEXIST...BUT EXTREMELY STUPID AS WELL.

reply

I don’t think that works, because the league is filled with masculine, butch lesbians, and woke feminists. You can’t just polish up a turd, but They would likely reject your suggestion anyway.

I do think in a more nuanced way that some more attractive women would improve their marketability though, because they demographics they belong to just don’t watch sports.

😑

reply

yeah true, but a minute after I posted that, I had a hot looking gal with makeup and special looking clothes pop up, she was a real player, getting photos done or something. she looked great. they should do that.

that field simply is what it is. most women don't love fishing or auto mechanics neither. and that is okay.

reply

“You can’t just polish up a turd”

But you can roll it in glitter!

reply

Good one 👍🏻.

reply

And I might actually watch the NBA if the players wore speedos.

reply

See? And that is okay! If you like that it's fine. :)

reply

BUT THAT ISN'T WHAT THE NBA IS...AND IT NEVER WILL BE...SAME AS THE WNBA.

reply

I don't know if it would boost their numbers, but I think it would be very uncomfortable for them to play in. Just like I think it would be very uncomfortable for women to play in skimpier outfits. Breast support is really important, as it can be painful to have them bouncing around.

I don't watch basketball at all, unless it's a game of one of the kids in my family or friends. I don't think that men will ever flock to women's sports. There are many reasons why, some of them I think I are rooted in misogyny, and some of them aren't. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it just is. I think it's a bit of a shame because a lot of times the women's games can be just as exciting to watch, but that's just my opinion.

reply

I catch your drift and I know you don’t follow a lot of sports, but if you like that Speedo look, you would’ve loved the NBA before Michael Jordan came along with the baggy shorts. Before His Airness, them cats were out there playin’ in biker shorts— we’re talking tight-ass short-shorts that would’ve made Daisy Duke (Catherine Bach) blush….as a guy, that shyt was nasty….so thank you MJ, you inadvertently saved some from the fate of testicular cancer…

reply

I grew up in the 80s and remember some of the men's short shorts with the mesh football jersey thingies that showed the bellies.

I really don't think that scantily clad women would draw more men to watch the league though.

reply

I ain’t gonna lie, and I’m dating myself here, but watching Gabriela Sabatini on the tennis court was appointment television back in the day. And Maria Sharapova ain’t too hard to look at either. But for me, in addition to entertainment, sports are about results and excellence. Sabatini and Sharapova succeeded where an Anna Kournakova failed; the formers won Major tournaments and were elite players, while Kournakova never won a major tournament, was never considered elite and was derisively called a “tennis model.”

But Miss AK used tennis to move away from the iron grip of Soviet Russia and eventually married Enrique Iglesias, so I’m sure she’s cool with all that…

But you’re correct. Various reasons exist for a lack of fan interest/viewerships of women’s athletics, but debasing the spirit of competition with the scantily clad would only draw the interest of some men for so long until they find something else to perv on….

reply

I don't have any interest, but hope Caitlin Clark does well

THIS IS GEN DIS....DON'T GET POLITICAL.

The WNBA is a business, as are all the other sports leagues. Of course they'd find a way to reach out to more viewers.

reply

If there's genuine interest that's cool but the media shouldn't play dumb when comparing salaries between the NBA and WNBA. The revenue of the WNBA is a fraction of what is generated from Men's Pro Sports leagues therefore the salaries are much less.

reply

THIS IS TRUE.

reply

Maybe. This is probably the most hype I’ve seen for a female basketball player coming out of college. But we are coming off of March madness, and the WNBA draft, so who knows how long it will last.

reply

Someone find and post that bit Bill Burr does - it nails it.

That's the one.

epic. I never saw the whole thing, just the highlights.
that is hilarious and 10,000 % true at the same time. :)

fact is, there just isn't much interest... AND THAT IS OKAY.
Everything will never be "equal" just because some might WISH it was.

reply

I read somewhere that the WNBA has never turned a profit, and in fact is subsidized by the NBA to stay in business. So a fair salary would be $0.

reply

It’s totally subsidized by the NBA, which is the only reason the league has been kept afloat so long.

Caitlin Clark should add an infusion of interest, but the NCAA structure, continuity and history should allow it to remain more popular than the WNBA. Add in the college NIL deals and it really looks like an uphill battle for any women’s pro league to surpass the popularity of the college game. As it is, women’s sports leagues in general are always a tough sell, for various reasons.

A totally different issue, but it’d probably be better if former players and greats of the women’s game quit shytting on Clark and her “place”, her “legacy” in the annals of women’s basketball. Not a marketing major, but I’d think it could only help if those former greats criticizing and opining on Clark to stop doing such and embrace the attention and talent Clark brings to the game. No need to kiss ass and make Clark a big deal- the Iowa star has the game to back it up so far— but give props where props are deserved. The last two NCAA women’s Final Four attracted a larger TV audience than the men’s side. Lots of talented ladies , but Clark was in both final games. She’s a known quantity. And the first overall pick of the WNBA draft….
