movies that were really popular just a few years ago that seem to have already been forgotten?

What are some movies that were really popular when they first came out in the past ten years or so that seem to have already been forgotten? This isn't necessarily about whether they were any good or not, just where they currently stand in terms of relevance and significance in film culture.

Here's a few that come to mind:

Bird Box (2018)
The Babadook (2014)
Zootopia (2016)
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
Moonlight (2016)

What others come to mind?

Many films are falsely championed as great by ‘critics’ because they meet certain woke criteria, but in reality the audience are indifferent or hostile towards them.

reply

🤣YOU ARE CONSISTENT...I WILL GIVE YOU THAT.

reply

Fifty Shades of Grey.
Hunger Games.
Twilight.

reply

Hopefully Barbie is in this category soon.

reply

Probably will be.

reply

that ship has sailed after Ryan was nominated for an oscar.

reply

He was the only decent actor in the movie. Now that the Oscars are done and it seems there's no sequel in development Barbie can now be forgotten.

reply

I thought Margot and Ryan were both fantastic. I was just surprised Margots Hollywood Overlords snubbed her. I guess she isnt Hollywood royalty anymore.

reply

BARBIE WAS EXCELLENT...STOP BEING A HATER.

reply

The J. J. Abrams Star Trek movie series grounded down to a halt.

reply

oh yeah, forgot about those.

reply

I've only seen the first 2. And the second one, I really struggled with.

reply

Is it too soon to include the MCU films? They might not be forgotten, but they seem to have really taken a dive in the last few years.

reply

JUST DON'T MENTION THE GOTG...THOSE MOVIES FUCKING ROCK.

reply

Thank god.

reply

I think this is most movies now. There's much less room for longstanding cultural capital due to the flood of new content.

reply

💯

reply

"Flood of 'new' content...."

Relatively speaking, given the deluge of remakes, reboots that dominate lately.

reply

I'm fine with that if it lowers the market share of "capeshit"

reply

Not a fan of MCU, I take it?

That's another played out film genre.

reply

Hunger games.

reply

Most Netflix movies that were "the most watched movies in the world" or something.

From Bird Box to 6 Underground, Red Notice, The Gray Man, Don't Look Up & The Adam Project just to name some.

reply

THAT IS A FAIR STATEMENT.

reply

I think 'Don't Look Up' will become a cult classic. Its a wonderful farce. Good farces sometimes have staying power.

reply

Agreed. I loved it.

reply

I wanted to like it, I really did but it was VERY in your face.

They shot the art of subtlety out of a Canon. 😆

P.S. It's really not a bad movie & much much better than a lot of Netflix movies. It just came & went way faster than I thought.

reply

No worries. It wasn't subtle. But neither was Dr. Strangelove - its funny, I've read the contemporaneous NYT review of that and what the reviewer didn't get was how actually rickety & vulnerable the US & Russia were to nuclear exchange.
