What kind of rabbit is this?

I couldn't get a good picture of it because of the distance and low light (I had to brighten that picture a lot in Photoshop just to see anything).

It doesn't look like an Eastern Cottontail, since it doesn't have a mottled color or white tail - https://i.natgeofe.com/k/58df97a7-5c47-44b8-97c1-cddecd7d4a4f/full-body-cottontail_4x3.jpg

It's a mostly solid dark gray or brown color, and it's quite brazen too. It's been hanging around my house and some of the neighbors' houses for the past week or so, eating grass right out in the open in broad daylight. You can get fairly close to it before it will decide to move, and when it does, it doesn't bolt away like a typical wild animal, it just lazily hops a little ways away and starts eating grass again.

I've lived here my whole life (except from 1992 to 1998), which is a residential street in a small town in Maine, and I've seen skunks, raccoons, woodchucks, squirrels, chipmunks, and moles outside, but this is the first rabbit I've ever seen out there. They don't normally venture into town. Maybe it's not even wild, but rather, an escaped pet.

It looks like a Hare rather than a rabbit.

Hare have long legs and rabbits have shorter ones and are more compact.

reply

That looks like a domestic/pet rabbit, probably escaped from a barn or hutch.
Wild cottontails tend to be grey or brown and very thin, fast runners.

It likely wont last very long, the coyotes and hawks will make short work of it.

You should try to trap it and bring it inside, it’s just meat out there.

reply

There is a special place in hell for people who abandon pets.

reply

I completely agree, some people are simply trash. Animals should be treated kindly.

However, I kept bunnies for many years and they are total escape artists, that dude looks well fed, probably escaped a barnyard.

The infamous Esquilax -- claimed to be a horse with the head of a rabbit and the body of a rabbit by Chief Wiggum.

reply

THAT IS BUNNICULA.

reply

You got a lol from me for that one.

You're right, red eyes and all.

This is my yard rabbit.

Signed, million man.

reply

Yup, that’s a wild cottontail, notice the erect ears, wide open eyes, looks skinny and ready to dash off any second.

reply

There is about 3 or 4 of them and they chase each other doing laps around the house.

Signed, million man.

reply

That is the very elusive Chupacabra.

It was an unsuccessful tune by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, they did better with What Kind of Fool Am I?

Did you know that the line from Crocodile Dundee that I, apparently you, and tons of other people, remember as,
"That's not a knife, this is a knife," is actually, "That's not a knife, that's a knife."?
