What was he famous for before the Passion?

When ever someone mentions him they always say he played Jesus in the Passion or he plays John Reese on Person of Interest so what was he famous for before the Passion?

reply

I first saw him in Outlander.

Outlander! That movie took bits and pieces of other movies and smashed them together to make a weird mesh of Predator, Dragonslayer and Mad Max. It's a fun mess. It surprised me that he was in it as (as fun as it was) it seemed (at least to me) to be beneath him.

First remember seeing him in Pay It Forward, where he stood out in a good way. Then Frequency and The Count of Monte Christo, both of which I enjoyed quite a bit.

reply

I'd say Frequency would be considered his breakout role.

reply

For sure. He was not on my radar at all before that movie.

I first took note of him in Frequency and the next one was The Count of Monte Cristo. He was great in both films.

reply

I've mentioned elsewhere but just thinking about it now because I saw Pay It Forward over the weekend. He had a minor part in that movie which was essential to the plot. Just about same time Frequency came out.

reply

I saw that film but it was MANY years ago, around the time of its release.

It's a shame that Hollywood has decided to turn its back on Caviezel just because they don't like his political and religious views. He's a great talent who has largely had his career stolen from him.

Count of Monte Cristo

He was on the B-list for quite a while, and got to the low part of the A-list for a bit, he seemed to be doing pretty well. I don't know why his career slipped away, but I suspect it had something to do with a refusal to play the Hollywood game by Hollywood's rules, the main thing I remember about him is that he refused to do anything onscreen that he considered immoral, and that included kissing women who weren't his wife.

A lot of careers have tanked when actors refused to play the Hollywood game, or limited the sorts of roles they were willing to take. And if a handsome male actor won't play villains or jerks, and won't even kiss a woman, that rules out a LOT of the sorts of roles that handsome midlife male actors are offered.

He's an excellent actor.
