What was he famous for before the Passion?

When ever someone mentions him they always say he played Jesus in the Passion or he plays John Reese on Person of Interest so what was he famous for before the Passion?

The Count of Monte Cristo

He wasn’t “famous” for anything before Passion. But he did appear in several shows and movies starting in 1991.

I always knew him from The Count of Monte Cristo and Frequency. I love those 2 films, highly rewatchable and watched them over 10x. He was also in The Thin Red Line.

He was "it boy of the moment" that Hollywood tried to make happen. Out of nowhere he was suddenly cast as lead in many movies that came out and were heavily promoted. Hollywood always does it. They find unknown actor and starts aggressively push them. Maybe they sleep their way up, maybe they are nepo, maybe it's genuine and producers think they discovered new movie star.

Some of them make it to stardom and being loves by public. Like Damon, Affleck, Hemsworth, Jackman, Bullock etc.

Some get rejected by public and they show no interest. After few flops producers understand that they will lose money and just stop casting those "failed stars". And go searching new It Girl or Boy of the moment. And those actors just vanish overnight. And then years later people wonder where they went. They still work but it's some low budget crap. They never get cast in lead role in a movie that has to make money at the box-office.

They really pushed Jim Caviezel. In a span of 4 years he was in so many movies.

1998 The Thin Red Line
2000 Frequency
2000 Pay It Forward
2001 Angel Eyes (with Jennifer Lopez)
2002 The Count of Monte Cristo
2002 High Crimes

But he is so boring and such bad actor that Hollywood quickly gave up. Those movies were not box-office hits despite heavy promotion. And some even lost money.

Then he did that The Passion of the Christ in 2004. And that was it with his "Movie Career as a Leading Man and Next Big Thing".

He got extremely lucky with that Person of Interest tv show who somehow became popular Thanks to Lost actor mainly. And he was "just there" with his boring face. And then it ended.

It's really amazing how this piece of furniture got into movies with so many famous actors. He has literally one face expression - confused idiot that doesn't understand what is happening.
