Stevie Wonder composed and most of the lyrics to Gangsta's Paradise

You can listen to the original song that Coolio ripped off here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0S4SiLxt1s

It's a shame that Coolio died young, but I'm hearing people praise him as a genius. Not only was all of the music Wonder's, most of the lyrics were his, "Been spending most of their lives...", "Tell me why..." etc.

reply

Cue the people who are going to mindlessly say "do you know what sampling is, brah" - as if it's not significantly easier to directly take from what's already great, than creating something great from scratch.

All sampling is also not created equal. Some things that Kanye has done for example have creatively and drastically changed the samples into something entirely new. In this instance however, almost everything that made Gangsta's Paradise a success and special came entirely from Wonder's original song, with minimal changes.

This isn't exactly tasteful in immediate response to Coolio's death, but it is what it is.

reply

I'm glad you admit it's not tasteful you piece of shit. I hope you have the same reaction when your family members die, who i'm sure are not beyond criticism.

reply

Oh my, how you're so very offended. Comparing a family member's death to discussing a celebrity on an internet message board - the stupidity, it burns.

Anyway, maybe you should try to signal your virtue and righteous anger to the OP instead... or actually respond to the arguments presented here. But we all know you're just being a toxic little trollish projector, based on your previous posts.

reply

Can dish it out but can't take it. Typical. He's still a human being that passed away dickhead, your family member or not. Expect people to call you out on it when you're trying to be an edgy piece of shit online.

reply

My original post was "edgy"? Talking about the merits and degrees of music sampling? Oh dear, what a bleeding heart you are, bud.

It definitely is impressive just how many Clone Trolls™ there are on this site - I guess it's the lack of moderation, allows your kind to fester and spread.

Anyway, maybe we should take a dive into your post history, if you want to talk about hypocrisy and what being an "edgy piece of shit online" is. Or maybe you can just respond to the actual subject here, instead of pretending to be offended by discussing celebrities on internet messageboards.

What about putting that sweaty fat dude (with his balls to the walls awesome voice) doing the chorus, that was Coolio's idea not Wonder's idea, Wonder dint put a fat dude to do the chorus as consequence being his song less awesome and badass like Gansta Paradise.

*discreetly speeding up an old chaka khan song to use as a hook for my debut single*

reply

Yeah...No disrespect to Coolio...but he was an average rapper (at best) who dined-out on this one-hit 'wonder' (pun intended) for over 25 years.

Stevie Wonder (allegedly) only granted Coolio the usage of 'Pastime Paradise' on the provision that the profanity was removed and the lyrics toned-down.

As it stands, the only track of his that I ever liked was this one (from the 'New Jersey Drive' OST in 1995)

Not really a fan of mainstream rap...But R.I.P. to Coolio (nonetheless)

"Stevie Wonder (allegedly) only granted Coolio the usage of 'Pastime Paradise' on the provision that the profanity was removed and the lyrics toned-down."

yeah that's what i heard as well
obviously Stevie's original is superior but i also like Coolio's rap

reply

Ok, boomer.

reply

As long as (quote) 'Boomer' is the polar-opposite' to YOU (and everything you stand for) then I'll take that as a compliment.

Care to refute anything that's been said?

reply

Trust me he won't respond. The best he had was five year old passe phrase

TheArgentinian is one of these foreign national trolls who are trying so desperately to pass themselves off as American by adopting and throwing these American-specific terms they don't know or understand. It's part of their mass disinformation campaign, where they start muddying the waters of how Americans get to know or understand themselves. I've heard everyone from Australia to Zimbabwe now calling themselves "GenX" and "Baby Boomers" now, when these terms refer to specific generations born in America, and things specific to American culture.

I used to get angry over this stuff. Now I just call them out for the disinformation trolls that they are.

reply

I doubt he is an Argentine. I suspect is a white USA citizen sitting in his mama's house trying to be relevant.

reply

Coolio was a boomer. And that phrase was passe 5 years ago

reply

Coolio was Gen X, fool. And some phrases never go out of style, if you catch my drift.

reply

Buzz off, foreign national. Coolio was not GenX.

If you were American--and not a foreign troll--you'd know that the label, "GenX" refers specifically to WHITE KIDS who came of age in the late 1980s and early 90s and were into the grunge/alternative rock scene (Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Lollapalooza, etc.), had a particular look (flannel and jeans, body piercings, etc.) and were into "dark" movies (Heathers, Se7en, Tim Burton films). If you called any black person from the 90s "GenX"--especially the ghetto, hip hop crowd that listened rap music-- they'd think you were a lunatic.

reply

And you call ME a troll? Go back to 4chan, you sad, lonely man.

reply

Uh, no...Where in the world did you hear that nonsense?

reply

Baby Boomer Generation: people aged 56 to 75 (born between 1946 and 1965)

Coolio birth date August 1, 1963. His age was 59.

If you need this translated to Catalan let me know.

reply

While some phrases never go out of style "ok, boomer " definitely has. It's vogue was less than six months. You're the first person to use it in years.

And Coolio was a boomer.

reply

Have you done the math and realized Coolio was a boomer?

reply

I see you're hung up on this shit 2 weeks later. So I'll say he isn't ✌

reply

A LARGE PART OF THE SONG'S APPEAL CAN ALSO BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE OTHER GUY ON THE TRACK...THE SINGER...HE REALLY HELPED SELL A RAP SONG TO A DIFFERENT AUDIENCE...EVEN MY DAD LIKED THE SONG AT THE TIME.

reply

With all due respect to the late Coolio, I wouldn’t say he was a genius he was a bit of a one hit wonder and if it was a choice between listening to Coolio or Stevie Wonder I’d have to pick Stevie Wonder, it's more my kind of music.

But I really like Coolios re-interpretation of Pastime Paradise, and out the two I think Gangstas Paradise is the more entertaining pop song.

reply

Coolio's first album that included Fantastic Voyage, was actually really good. I still listen to tracks from it in present day. Most of his lyrics tell a story typical of the time period, when the gangster rappers were trying to convey life in the hood.

You have to look beyond the radio tracks, because all of the famous rappers had to sample pop songs from the past to get on the radio. You have to get on the radio to sell records, that's the facts.

You guys coming on here busting on Coolio over one track that was mega popular and discounting his entire career, it's obvious you never really listened to his music, especially his lyrics. He's nowhere near my favorite rapper or anything close to it, but he had some real solid tracks that weren't radio cuts.

reply

QUOTE: "Coolio's first album that included Fantastic Voyage"

ALL of those songs were SAMPLED.

"Fantastic Voyage"="Fantastic Voyage" by Lakeside: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1YjmXSyHa8

1,2,3,4 (Sumpin' New)=too many artists to mention: https://www.whosampled.com/Coolio/1,-2,-3,-4-(Sumpin%27-New)/

reply

And so??? You're complaint is so fucking stupid. It's extremely stupid in the case of Gangster's Paradise, because you're argument boils down to the same ignorant asses that try to say A Fistful of Dollars sucks because Yojimbo came before it.

What is wrong with sampling anyway? It's not like people are just stealing shit and getting away with it, you know they have to license the samples and pay royalties right? Please tell us more of your ignorance on the matter, I'm sure we'd all love a good laugh.

reply

So we should get rid of the award "best adapted screenplay" because it's basically just riding the coattails of someone else and there's no real talent transforming someone else's work? In this case a non-hit, forgettable track on an old album into a global smash hit?

reply

An ADAPTED screenplay is not someone taking someone else's work, giving it a new name and then getting credit for it. It's a screenplay that translates a person's work for the big screen.

In many cases, the original author of a book or story is also the one that adapts the screenplay. For instance, Mario Puzo WON "Best Adapted Screenplay" for adapting his own novel for The Godfather. Tennessee Williams adapted his own plays for the movie adaptations.

Stop wasting time being an "argument troll," which is to argue just to argue. If you love to argue, then pick up a book on Debating and Logic so you can do so effectively. What you're doing here is not arguing.

reply

You don't have any clue what your are talking about, and it becomes more apparent with every post. You should really stop posting.

reply

Taking a book of sometimes a thousand pages and making it 120 of mostly dialogue and scene descriptions is usually NOT done by the original author. It takes an outsider's perspective to trim the fat, get to the heart of the matter and make it work as a movie and not a story.

You gotta be able to see the potential.
