I always had the impression that he was a prick

I sensed that something really nasty seethed inside of him, that all the affability and down-home humility was a calculated facade.

I don't know if he was a prick. Don Knotts liked him a lot.

Frances Bavier (Aunt Bee) reportedly disliked him.

He was usually a good guy but he played a handful of villainous roles starting with A Face in the Crowd.

He was a really bad guy in Murder in Coweta County

I'm pretty sure Don Knotts didn't get along politically with Andy Griffith, they were polar opposites. Aunt Bee was upset that she didn't get higher billing on the show IIRC.

Supposedly he was a very good man. Fans could approach him in the streets and he would talk to them.

He was very generous to his friends:
When Don Knotts couldn't get work he created a role on Matlock specifically for him.

When R.G. Armstrong went blind and could no longer work, Griffith got him full time care and moved him to a facility nearby so he could visit him whenever he was home, and Griffith covered all the bills .

Word in Hollywood is that he was. Word in his hometown is that he was. Someone here is saying he was good to his fans.

That's like asking someone if William Shatner is a jerk. By most accounts, he is. But some people have heartwarming, charming stories about him. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hollywood is a tough town. I don't think you can be successful without being something of a ruthless bastard.
