shareI think it’s more accurate to say he opposed any Civil War monuments - whether Union or Confederacy - as they might only sustain the North vs. South emotions that undermined true reconciliation. I recall reading he even opposed national preservation of the Gettysburg battlefield on such grounds. But your point provides good perspective for our modern assessment on these statutes if they are doing nothing but tearing us apart.
