Remake: Who should play Harold + Maude?

If there were a remake, I know, God forbid, but anyway, if there were, I think Sam Riley (Control, Franklyn) would make a great Harold, or Lukas Haas, though he's getting a bit old for the role imo.

As for Maude, Doris Day would guarantee 'shock' value. Otherwise, a makeup free Helen Mirren would do nicely imo.

I don't know about the two main casts, but as Harold's mother; "Carrie-Ann Moss".
Based on her role in the movie "Chocolate".

To remake this film would obviously be an attempt to cash-in on a flawless classic. Threads like this almost seem like the "fantasy sports" phenomenon taken to film stars. Maybe eventually there will become a "fantasy filmmaking" site where people can remake old classic films with today's stars and bet which stars will make the most money that year.

I'm watching this right now on TCM and Elijah Wood looks a lot like Harold with the bug eyes and small frame.

Who can? Really? Bud plays "still" like no other.

Oh...it was "re-made" in France by the screenwriter that worked with Bunuel (sp). Pretty good.

Cloris Leachman and Shia Lebeouf

snoogins

No one should ever remake this movie. That would be a crime!! I for one would NEVER watch a remake because no one could take the place of Ruth Gordon and especially Bud Cort!

reply

Cloris Leachman would be great -- never thought of her -- but... Shia Lebeouf? Ugh.

reply

Oh yeah, you're right! Cloris Leachman would be perfect for the Maude role. I just saw her interviewed on a talk show a few weeks ago and she already displays Maude's vibrant and free-spirited nature.

And the other person's suggestion to use Elijah Wood would work, too. He has a vulnerability that comes across well in his character interpretations.

I'm sure there are other good candidates. But those suggestions work well...

Sam Riley has/had a good look for it.

He's probably too old now also, but I think it would have been fascinating to see what Lee Pace would have done with the part 6 or 7 years ago. There are a number of actors I think are wonderful and could match Cort for subtlety and whimsy and emotional range -- but they're all too old, and I'm not sure they could have done it when they were young. Paul Dano? He's great, but I haven't seem him do anything similar. Lou Pucci? Patrick Fugit? I think maybe Fugit would come closest.

And yes, god forbid, oh noes, a remake would be a likely travesty, but ... if they did make one in about 10-15 years, I'd plunk down my money happily to see Meryl Streep as Maude.

There was a thread about this already -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067185/board/thread/78597445 -- didn't realize.

Oh, and it just came to me: Harold: Zooey Deschanel, in drag. Definitely with Meryl Streep. Oh, maybe they can leave out the drag and just do a gay version.

reply

Just realized another excellent prospect: Vincent Kartheiser, an excellent actor who can still pass for early 20s.

reply

I would like to see this remade with Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood, or better yet not remade at all.

"Harold . . . That was your last date!"

reply

If they were going to remake it I think Paul Dano could pull off a decent Harold and Eva Marie Saint as Maude
