What's with the 'out of focus' look of the whole film?

The whole film looks like it wasn't shot entirely in focus and looks incredibly soft/blurry and even blown out in some scenes.

Is this the fault of the quality of the prints or did the film always look this way?

One suggestion.
Glasses.

It seems like they were going for that dream-like look. I definitely would have preferred it if that had not used this effect.

idk it looked very bad.
also the entire 4th quarter is in darkness

There is a haze to the picture but for whatever reason - it did not hurt the film at all .. I still enjoy it

Now I remember buying the vhs a long time ago - the picture quality was shit and the sound was god awful lol

Diffusion filter.

"When used in front of the camera lens, a diffusion filter softens subjects and generates a dreamy haze. This effect can also be improvised by smearing petroleum jelly on a UV filter or shooting through a nylon stocking."
